Realism, the dominant theory of international relations, particularly regarding security, seems compelling in part because of its claim to embody so much of Western political thought from the ancient Greeks to the present. Its main challenger, liberalism, looks to Kant and nineteenth-century economists. Despite their many insights, neither realism nor liberalism gives us adequate tools to grapple with security globalization, the liberal ascent, and the American role in their development. In reality, both realism and liberalism and their main insights were largely invented by republicans writing about republics. The main ideas of realism and liberalism are but fragments of republican security theory, whose primary claim is that security entails the simultaneous avoidance of the extremes of anarchy and hierarchy, and that the size of the space within which this is necessary has expanded due to technological change. In Daniel Deudney's reading, there is one main security tradition and its fragmentary descendants. This theory began in classical antiquity, and its pivotal early modern and Enlightenment culmination was the founding of the United States. Moving into the industrial and nuclear eras, this line of thinking becomes the basis for the claim that mutually restraining world government is now necessary for security and that political liberty cannot survive without new types of global unions. Unique in scope, depth, and timeliness, Bounding Power offers an international political theory for our fractious and perilous global village.

"Russell Kirk is widely regarded as the individual most responsible for the revival of conservative thought in the latter half of the twentieth century. Kirk's conservative philosophy was well-established with his magnum opus, The Conservative Mind, published in 1953, and remained constant until his death in 1994. His Christianity, though, grew from something seen as the foundation of Western Civilization to being also a personal faith. He became a Roman Catholic, drawn by its universality, its traditionalism, and his love for the woman he married. Although he believed in certain Catholic distinctives, such as purgatory, he generally seemed to be more of a generic Christian than a dogmatic follower of Rome."--Bloomsbury Publishing.

"Edmund Burke, 1729-1797, was perceived as leading progressive figure until he published his reaction to the French Revolution, Reflections on the Revolution in France, which he wrote as the Revolution unfolded. This volume places Burke in his historical context and carefully sets out the whole of Burke's philosophical contribution. It not only discusses the reception of Burker by his contemporaries, but also the impact of his ideas on politics and policy today."--Bloomsbury Publishing.

"This book is the first attempt to present an integrated overview of the development of liberal, conservative, and socialist thought in the Republican era, which formed the intellectual foundations of Chinese modernity. The book explores ideas in relation to their cultural and political backgrounds. The author argues that the key to understanding the Chinese quest for modernity lies in an appreciation of the interrelatedness and interplay of different schools of thought. There is no one single vision of Chinese modernity. Instead, different visions contest, interact, and influence one another"--Provided by publisher.

"The military venture on which George W. Bush embarked within months of his 2001 inauguration has eclipsed all other efforts during his presidency. What started as a military response to al Qaeda's attacks in New York and Washington on September 11, 2001, with the goal of neutralizing al Qaeda and its Taliban hosts in Afghanistan, quickly fused with the neoconservative agenda to reshape and dominate the Middle East. Al Qaeda's terrorism was answered with American military power, which has destroyed or blighted the lives of millions in Afghanistan, Iraq, and Pakistan." "Having kept a keen rye on the region for more than three decades, former BBC correspondent Deepak Tripathi systematically identifies in Overcoming the Bush Legacy in Iraq and Afghanistan the administration's naive calculations, strategic and operational blunders, disregard for history and for other cultures, and even downright prejudices that have brought so much harm to so many. Bush's "war on terror" has provoked resentment and violent opposition, opened up sectarian divisions, and created Hobbesian conditions of all-against-all war. The long-term price tag for America has been estimated at a colossal $3 trillion, but as Tripathi seeks to demonstrate, the total cost, in human and economic terms, will be incalculable." "Overall, Tripathi asserts that American exceptionalism and unilateralism are relics of a bygone political era. The limitations of twenty-firstcentury military technology have been laid bare, and the legacy of the administration's foreign policy will take years to overcome. The Obama administration must now undertake slow and painstaking diplomacy to repair ties with adversaries, to listen more to allies, and to seek new ones. Overcoming the Bush Legacy in Iraq and Afghanistan is not only a cogent and honest appraisal of the Bush administration, but also a stark reminder of the consequences we all face."--BOOK JACKET.
