Abstract

Data formats designed to facilitate communications between radio frequency identification (RFID) systems and smart RFID tags with integral transducers (sensors and actuators) are introduced in this standard. New transducer electronic data sheet (TEDS) formats for smart RFID tags, based on the IEEE 1451 family of standards, are defined. Also, a comprehensive command set for smart RFID tags is defined. Keywords: network capable application processor (NCAP), radio frequency identification (RFID) tag, sensor command, sensor integration, sensor interface, sensor standard, smart RFID tags, transducer electronic data sheet (TEDS), transducer interface module (TIM).

Abstract

Understanding of basic phenomena connected with electromechanical properties of solid materials. Overview of electromechanical (piezoelectric, ferroelectric, electrostrictive) properties of materials representing different classes of solids (pure piezoelectrics, ferroelectrics, ferroelastics and higher order ferroics, crystals, ceramics, composites, thin films, and so on) and macroscopic description of how their electromechanical features relate to other macroscopic properties.

Abstract

Optical communication using optical fibres as the transmission medium is essential to handling the massive growth of both telecom and datacom traffic. To fully realize the potential bandwidth available on these optical fibres, other components of the optical network system have to be developed, ranging from detectors and multiplexers to buffers and switches. This book addresses the different technologies which can be applied to switching optical signals. An optical switch functions by selectively switching an optical signal delivered through an optical fibre or in an integrated optical circuit

Abstract

The research trend in the automotive domain is clearly moving from mechanically controlled to computer assisted systems for both vehicle handling and comfort functions. Driver Assistance Systems (DAS), originally integrated to decrease the cognitive load and to increase the comfort for the driver, cause additional workload and stress for the driver, and as a consequence may distract from the main activity of driving and lead to traffic accidents. Andreas Riener studies the influence of implicit interaction using vibro-tactile actuators, invisibly and unobtrusively embedded into the car seat, as additional sensory channels for car-driver feedback, and pressure sensor mats, integrated into the seat for implicit information transmission from the driver toward the vehicle. The results of the experiments, e.g. implicit driver identification or activity recognition, vibro-tactile activity notification, motivate to use both vibro-tactile notifications and pressure sensor images to improve vehicle handling performance and to decrease the driver’s cognitive workload.

Abstract

The automobile of the future has to meet two primary requirements: the super-efficient use of energy and power and the ultra-safe transportation of people and goods Both features are increasingly enabled by smart, adaptive and context aware information and communication technologies (ICT), electrical or electronic components and systems rather than solely by the mechanical means of classic automotive engineering. The most advanced example of this trend is the electrified vehicle combining a full electric powertrain with completely electronic controls like smart power and energy managers, steer-by-wire technologies and intelligent networking capabilities. It has been the mission of the International Forum on Advanced Microsystems for Automotive Applications (AMAA) for more than twelve years now to detect paradigm shifts and to discuss their technological implications at an early stage. Therefore, the topic of the AMAA 2010 is “Smart Systems for Green Cars and Safe Mobility”. This book contains peer-reviewed conference papers presented at the conference by experts of major companies and leading academic institutions. They report on ongoing research and novel developments in the field of ICT, components and systems enabling the automobile and road transport of the future. A particular focus is on basic technologies and advanced applications of electrified and electric vehicles, road and passenger safety, driver assistance, traffic management and powertrain efficiency. Due to this broad coverage of topics related to sustainability of the automobile both the AMAA event and this book serve the spreading of knowledge generated in the framework of the European Green Cars Initiative. Additional information is available on www.amaa.de.
