This book is a practical resource for physiotherapists and occupational therapists who support people with cerebral palsy, helping them to solve the problems with movement and other impairments that so often accompany cerebral palsy, so that they can be more active and better able to participate in roles such as study, work, recreation and relationships. The first chapters provide the background to the clinical reasoning approach that informs the whole text, as well as an overview of therapeutic interventions. The subsequent chapters present clinical situations that therapists will encounter in the course of their work with individuals with cerebral palsy across the lifespan. Each chapter describes a case in detail, including the reasoning behind assessment and treatment choices, interventions and outcomes.

This book is the result of studies on cerebral palsy (CP) in children that the authors and their collaborators (medical doctors and therapists) have carried out in recent years. It addresses the main topics associated with the evaluation of adaptive functions in the spastic forms of CP (definition and modifications over the most recent decades, newly classified orientations, etiopathogenesis, anatomic–functional correlations, semiotics, and the so-called associated disorders: visual, cognitive, and behavioral). The main goal of this book is to offer readily accessible information on the nature of the disease, the problems correlated with prognosis, and the rehabilitation. Because of its instructive nature and practical approach, the book will be an invaluable tool for practitioners already working in this field (medical doctors, child neuropsychiatrists and physiatrists, and rehabilitation therapists), for university students studying physical and occupational therapy, and for residents in rehabilitative medicine, child neurology, and orthopedics.

Even the most powerful men in the world are human-they get sick, take dubious drugs, drink too much, contemplate suicide, fret about ailing parents, and bury people they love. Young Richard Nixon watched two brothers die of tuberculosis, even while doctors monitored a suspicious shadow on his own lungs. John Kennedy received last rites four times as an adult, and Lyndon Johnson suffered a "belly buster" of a heart attack. David Blumenthal and James A. Morone explore how modern presidents have wrestled with their own mortality-and how they have taken this most human experience to heart as they faced the difficult politics of health care. Drawing on a trove of newly released White House tapes, on extensive interviews with White House staff, and on dramatic archival material that has only recently come to light, The Heart of Power explores the hidden ways in which presidents shape our destinies through their own experiences. Taking a close look at Franklin D. Roosevelt, Harry S. Truman, Dwight Eisenhower, John Kennedy, Lyndon B. Johnson, Richard Nixon, Jimmy Carter, Ronald Reagan, George Herbert Walker Bush, Bill Clinton, and George W. Bush, the book shows what history can teach us as we confront the health care challenges of the twenty-first century.

Neuromuscular monitoring is critical for the judicious use of muscle relaxants. In combination with reversal, it is fundamental to every successful strategy for managing postoperative residual blocks. This reference work is a compendium of all the essential information needed to monitor neuromuscular function. Physiological and pharmacological basics of neuromuscular transmission, principles of neuromuscular monitoring: How to place stimulation electrodes, properly select the stimulation mode and interprete findings, practical techniques for clinical routine, clinical concepts behind qualitative and quantitative nerve stimulators, comprehensive presentation of acceleromyography including a question & answer section, summaries of all key points, current guidelines on the scientific use of acceleromyography.
