Abstract

At the request of Springer-Verlag, Heidelberg, I have written with pride and pleasure the new edition of the Manual of Aesthetic Surgery. Volumes1(headand neckregion)and 2(body)havebeen integrated into one volume, which has been revised and extended with the addition of the topics “Cosmetic Aesthetic Surgery,” “Breast Surgery,” “Mini Lift,” “Mini Abdomen,” “Buttock Lift,” and “Tumescence Li- suction with the MicroAire® System.” The current trend is towards gentle surgical methods. The ‘Mang School’ has as its motto: Less is more! You should not see cosmetic s- gery. Aesthetic surgery is feel-good surgery and not altering surgery. That should be the philosophy of this book. The first editions of both volumes of the Manual of Aesthetic Surgery had high print runs and were translated into many languages, including Spanish, Russian, and Chinese. The new edition bridges a few gaps, namely breast lifting and breast reduction. These operations are described in detail using illustrations and videos, in order to provide also plastic and aesthetic surgeons with standards. Standards are of crucial importance in aesthetic surgery. Results must be reproducible. Every aesthetic surgeon will then be able to build on this manual and refine his or her methods.

Abstract

Written by experts in the fields of oculofacial plastic surgery and neuro-ophthalmology, Evaluation and Management of Blepharoptosis is an up-to-date, practical guide to the treatment of adults and children with ptosis. This comprehensive reference covers all aspects of blepharoptosis in an organized fashion. The book begins with evaluation of the patient to determine if true ptosis or pseudoptosis exists. The various categories of blepharoptosis are thoroughly and succinctly reviewed, along with suggested approaches to clinical management. Detailed descriptions of the various surgical techniques are replete with pearls provided by leading ptosis surgeons, along with advice regarding perioperative anesthesia and analgesia. Every surgeon should know how to handle the various surgical complications and surgical failure. Nevertheless, familiarity with surgical techniques is not enough. One must learn to identify risk factors and red flags that suggest a modified or conservative approach, or perhaps that surgery may be unwise. When surgery is unwarranted or unsuccessful, then one may consider nonsurgical therapeutic strategies. Regardless of treatment, the physician-patient relationship and detailed discussion with the patient prior to surgery regarding potential risks, complications, and realistic expectations impact patient satisfaction immeasurably. All of these issues are discussed in detail in this invaluable resource for the clinician.

Abstract

Craniofacial Trauma, Diagnosis and Management offers detailed guidance on the diagnosis, surgical planning, and interdisciplinary treatment of craniofacial trauma. The book is divided into two parts. The first, devoted to classification and diagnosis of craniofacial fractures, includes chapters on anatomy, radiology, fracture classification, fracture mechanisms, epidemiological aspects, symptoms, and specific related aspects of neuro-craniofacial injuries. The second part addresses the treatment of craniofacial trauma, examining operative principles and providing step-by-step descriptions of a variety of hard and soft tissue reconstructive procedures. Complications and late sequelae following craniofacial reconstruction are examined, and a further chapters is devoted to delayed reconstruction of craniofacial defects. New developments and the role of computer-assisted treatment planning are discussed in the final section. This manual will provide an indispensable reference for residents in maxillofacial training and for maxillofacial/ neurosurgeons in the specialized field of craniofacial traumatology. .

Abstract

Every surgeon who carries out rhinoplasty procedures will learn a great deal from this book. The beginner is guided through the performance of a standard rhinoplasty operation that can be expanded to incorporate the described advanced techniques as experience is gained. Here, the emphasis is on the routine case that is too frequently overlooked in favor of the esoteric. For the already proficient surgeon, on the other hand, the latest breakthroughs in the management of difficult cases, such as saddle nose, skin sleeve problems, and dorsal grafting, are clearly depicted. When appropriate, approaches developed exclusively by the author are presented. The lucid text is complemented by a wealth of color figures. The video clips are stored on ExtraMaterials (http://extras.springer.com).

Abstract

The treatment of sleep disordered breathing has been enriched by the development of various new and largely surgical techniques. The question of which treatment best suits each individual patient has become a highly sophisticated decision. Among others, the most important factors for selecting the most appropriate treatment modality are the cruelty of the disease, the pathology found within the upper airway, and the sites of obstruction. Therefore, the second edition of this book focuses on both the surgical treatment modalities and the current concepts for treatment decisions. For each procedure, current data (including data for the entirety of 2007) were reanalyzed according to the principles of evidence-based medicine, and are presented in well-arranged tables. Indications, techniques, complications, and specific follow-up treatments in the realm of sleep medicine have been compiled in the form of a primer. New chapters concerning radiofrequency-uvulopalatoplasty and combined soft palate procedures were added. Both authors run prominent otolaryngological sleep laboratories, and perform approximately 1,500 surgical sleep medicine procedures per year. The complete surgical and sleep medicine expertise of the authors, as well as the experience of numerous international courses on sleep surgery, have been incorporated into this volume, making it an indispensable textbook for sleep medicine surgeons.

Abstract

The third volume of Oculoplastic and Orbital Surgery continues in the excellent tradition of this unique series. The new volume offers readers a comprehensive update on a number of complex and challenging orbital disorders, including idiopathic orbital inflammation, ocular adnexal lymphoproliferative disorders, metastatic orbital tumors, and the latest therapies in the management of capillary hemangiomas, periorbital infections, and orbital and periorbital malignancies using specific targeted therapies. Modern concepts in orbital imaging are also highlighted, as are controversies in enucleation techniques with suggestions regarding the most effective ocular implants. Management of complex eyelid and periorbital problems is presented. This includes chapters on managing orbitofacial neurofibromatosis 1 and brow suspension for complicated unilateral ptosis. In addition, systemic and ophthalmic anomalies in congenital anophthalmos and microphthalmos are comprehensively reviewed. Lacrimal disorders, including the diagnosis and management of canalicular obstruction and lesions of the lacrimal drainage system encountered with dacryocystorhinostomy, are also presented. The area of cosmetic surgery is thoroughly covered in an extensive chapter discussing pearls in cosmetic oculofacial plastic surgery and another chapter presenting the latest concepts in using fillers for volume enhancement in the orbit and periorbit. As with the previous two volumes, the presentation of the latest concepts and management techniques in the field of oculofacial plastic surgery will prove to be an invaluable resource for both the comprehensive ophthalmologist and the subspecialist with a particular interest in disorders of the orbit, eyelids, and lacrimal system.
