Andre Kertesz (1894-1985) est de ces photographes qui ont forgé la modernité photographique au sein des avant-gardes européennes des années 1920. Il eut une influence sur le développement de la photographie au milieu du siecle, tout en gardant toute sa vie une indépendance et une singularité d'élaboration d'une poésie photographique qui fait de lui presque un marginal. Ses photographies ne sont pas des constats événementiels, mais des notations personnelles, comme des états d'âme projetés autour de lui. L'exposition du Jeu de Paume, qui sera accueillie dans plusieurs musées européens (Winterthur, Berlin, Budapest) est la première rétrospective de son oeuvre. Elle sera constituee de nombre de tirages vintages, en tout cas tous établis sous le contrôle du photographe. Le catalogue rendra compte de cet exceptionnel rassemblement d'oeuvres et de leur qualité visuelle par les choix de la maquette et de l'impression. Le parcours du livre, organisé en premier lieu par la succession des trois périodes de la carrière de Kertesz (Budapest 1914-1925; Paris 1925-1936; New-York 1936-1985), met également à l'honneur le métier de photographe (la participation à l'invention du reportage photographique en 1928) et la place des médias reproduisant des photographies (le magazine VU notamment). Deux particularités de la production de Kertesz font l'objet d'un traitement particulier, les distorsions (1932) et les polaroids (1979-1984). Chacune des parties fait l'objet d'une présentation récurrente associant un texte d'analyse historique illustré, un port folio des oeuvres, et des cahiers abordant successivement des points particuliers de l'esthétique et de la pratique de Kertesz.
