Il ne faut sans doute pas s’étonner si les écritures biographiques ont fait un retour fracassant sur la scène littéraire au cours des dernières décennies, comme en témoigne l’accueil critique très favorable des romans biographiques, des biographies imaginaires et des romans dits de filiation. En prise directe sur son époque, la biographie dans ses variantes les plus « réfléchies » s’astreint à penser un nouveau rapport au sujet, tout comme elle cherche à reprendre la réflexion sur une autre obsession contemporaine, soit le rapport au passé, à la tradition littéraire. Le corpus de quelque 350 œuvres qui fait l’objet de ce livre rassemble les textes consacrés aux écrivains par des écrivains, publiés pour la plupart depuis 1980 dans les principales langues occidentales. Les auteurs ont voulu rendre compte de la richesse et de la diversité de ce qu’ils appellent les « fictions biographiques », sans pour autant être guidés par un souci de représentativité ou par une volonté d’être exhaustifs. Explicitant le concept de transposition, ils proposent une lecture de la littérature contemporaine qui met en relief les écarts qu’elle arrive à se ménager entre le souvenir d’une longue lignée et les impératifs du présent.
