Abstract

This study investigates the function of the radio play asmedium of cultural memory, based on the memories of the holocaust found in the radio plays of the GDR. In comparison to the presentation of the holocaust in other media, which has already been explored various times, here for the first time the focus is on the specific aesthetic means of the radio play and the role of radio as political instrument of power in the FRG-GDR conflict. Extracts from the analyzed radio plays are included in the enclosed audio CD.

Abstract

Representations of the Holocaust changed dramatically in the 1990s, when film, literature, and works of visual art attracted international attention by provoking scandals. Holocaust art turned to genres and styles that had traditionally been considered taboo. This change raises many questions: Why the widespread provocation? Why are representational rules being broken at the turn of the millennium - rules that have been respected and observed for decades? What should we make of art of this kind? The contributors to this volume address these (and other) questions. They juxtapose conventional depictions of the Holocaust with recent works of art which reveal shifting paradigms in the fields of visual art, literature, film, pop culture, and aesthetic theory.

Abstract

Holocaust as Fiction seeks to explain and critically evaluate the extraordinary success of Schlink's internationally acclaimed novel, The Reader, the widely read "Selb" detective trilogy, and two popular films based closely on his work. With the help of wide-ranging reception data, the work of Holocaust scholars, as well as cultural and legal reflections on the concept of guilt, Donahue elucidates not only these works, but the wider critical climate that has fostered their success.

Abstract
