Die erste Geschichte des Abiturs von den Anfängen bis heute – informativ und amüsant. Seine »sittliche Aufführung war guth«, bescheinigte sein Reifezeugnis Karl Marx. Bismarck war mit seinem Gymnasium sehr zufrieden, während Wilhelm II. als Abiturient über 11stündige Arbeitstage klagte. Ein Bildungsexperte verurteilte 1910 die Abituranforderungen als »verwerfliches und unsittliches Folterverfahren«. Konrad Adenauer entzog sich dem wenigstens zum Teil – er brachte die Abituraufgaben Deutsch und Latein schon vorher in Erfahrung. Gut und lebendig geschrieben, führt das Buch vom ersten Abiturreglement in Preußen 1788 bis zur Oberstufenreform der 1970er Jahre und den aktuellen Neuerungen Zentralabitur und G 8. Es ist ein weiter Weg, der hier nachgezeichnet wird, vom Tor zur Universität für eine verschwindend kleine Bildungselite im 19. Jahrhundert bis zur Erlangung der Hochschulreife für 45 % eines Jahrganges heute. Doch nicht nur die Abiturientenzahlen, auch Inhalte und Anforderungen des Abiturs haben sich im Laufe der Zeit tiefgreifend verändert. Deutlich spiegeln sich in ihnen die Wandlungen des Zeitgeistes und der Gesellschaft, wie das Buch anschaulich vor Augen führt. In diesen Kontext gehört auch das Abitur für Mädchen. War es 1872 noch das Ziel der »Höheren Töchterschulen«, »dem Weibe eine der Geistesbildung des Mannes ebenbürtige Bildung zu ermöglichen, damit der deutsche Mann nicht durch die geistige Kurzsichtigkeit seiner Frau an dem häuslichen Herde gelangweilt und gelähmt werde«, so ist die Koedukation heute schulischer Alltag.
