Since the publication of the first book, Psychosocial Aspects of Narcolepsy in 1992 (Haworth Press), edited by Meeta Goswami, Michael Thorpy, et al., new data have emerged illustrating the damaging effects of narcolepsy on the quality of life of affected individuals. Moreover, since 1992, several discoveries and changes related to narcolepsy have been made, such as: new treatment modalities -- i.e., Provigil, Xyrem and more recently, atomoxetine and armodafinil; the discovery of the role of the hypocretin/orexin system in narcolepsy; recent evidence lending support to the hypothesis that narcolepsy may be an autoimmune condition; new information on the genetics of narcolepsy; and a revised definition of narcolepsy according to the International Classification of Sleep Disorders 2005. Furthermore, recent studies in the USA, Canada, Europe, and Australia document the negative effects of narcolepsy on the quality of life of those who have this disorder. In light of these new developments, and given the absence of a book that comprehensively covers the current thoughts and trends on Narcolepsy (as revealed by a review of current books on narcolepsy), this proposal is timely.

The study of maternal influences on the intrauterine environment as they relate to the developing fetal brain promises to be an important area of study. Findings in this area may make it possible to delineate the prenatal mechanisms that affect ongoing cell programming in the fetus and lead to neurodevelopmental disorders. Maternal Influences on Fetal Neurodevelopment: Clinical and Research Aspects advances the field by discussing a wide range of issues impacting several neurodevelopmental disorders. These include ADHD, autism, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and obsessive-compulsive disorder. Of value to practitioners and researchers in the areas of pediatric neurology, obstetrics and gynecology, fetal physiology, neuroscience, genetics, developmental medicine, perinatology, toxicology and developmental psychology, Maternal Influences on Fetal Neurodevelopment: Clinical and Research Aspects joins together research from various disciplines and demonstrates interrelated and common themes that can direct current and future multidisciplinary research and clinical care.

This work aims to provide a detailed reasoned map of fetal behavior by describing its features and evolution from 10 to 25 weeks gestation. Each behavioral event is described, measured in seconds and presented as it occurs in its natural sequence, thus providing a ‘real-time’ picture of fetal behavior. Links between events become clear, and events are connected to the changing anatomy and physiology of the nervous system and of the fetal body in general. Transient behaviour with its underlying structures and possible functions is carefully distinguished from anticipatory functions heralding post-natal life. Furthermore, phenomena of physiologic significance during prenatal life, but which can acquire pathological connotations for the premature infant having to meet the different requirements of the post-natal environment, are also outlined. Finally, various prenatal ‘myths’ are discussed, in order to give scientific information on issues;that are particularly relevant, given the heated pro-life versus pro-choice debate.

Intrinsic errors of skeletal development are individually rare but of clinical importance because of their overall frequency and their impact on a patient's life. Sonography has become a routine component of prenatal care, and many of these disorders are diagnosed prenatally. Postnatally, the prenatal diagnosis has to be verified. To this end, fetal radiography is an effective, simple and economic way to establish a diagnosis or to narrow the number of diagnostic possibilities sufficiently to enable pathological, biochemical or molecular studies to be used in the quest for a specific diagnosis. Equally important, a correct diagnosis is required for correct prognostication and parental counseling. This book has been written to assist in the postnatal diagnosis of fetal errors of skeletal development.

This book provides the analysis of a uniquely large, population-based data set evaluating congenital anomalies as a consequence of maternal diseases. The possible adverse birth outcomes of babies born to mothers diagnosed with important diseases have not yet been evaluated in such a material by the same method. The greatest merit of these studies is that by analyzing their data the authors managed to identify some new previously unknown associations between maternal diseases and adverse birth outcomes. The first aim of the authors was to summarize 50 years of experiences in human teratology which may help younger experts to use them. The second objective was to show the methodological weaknesses of previous studies and to recommend the use of up-to-date methods when designing new studies. A surveillance database like the one used in these studies effectively helps to monitor the most important indicators of adverse birth outcomes such as congenital anomalies, preterm births, and low birth weight, to evaluate the efficacy of medical care of pregnant women, and to detect possible causes of adverse birth outcomes in order to help in their prevention. In addition, the analysis of cost-benefit of this database showed that the benefit is much higher than cost. This book may be useful in the daily practice for obstetricians, paediatricians, general practitioners and epidemiologists, moreover it could be used in the training programmes of medical students and residents as well.
