Improving the performance of youth on the labour market is a crucial challenge in OECD countries facing persistent youth unemployment. Whatever the level of qualification, first experiences on the labour market have a profound influence on later working life. This report on Greece contains a survey of the main barriers to employment for young people, an assessment of the adequacy and effectiveness of existing measures to improve the transition from school to work, and a set of policy recommendations for further action by the public authorities and social partners. The report is based on the proceedings of a seminar and is published in English only. However, a French translation of the summary and main recommendations has been included in this volume.

Sri Lanka has long been regarded as a model of a successful welfare state in a low-income setting, yet it has not succeeded in creating a suffi cient number of "good jobs" for the increasing number of young people. Hence, young Sri Lankans perceive their country as an unjust and unequal society, in which mainstream institutions have failed to address inequalities in the distribution of resources, as well as of benefi ts deriving from economic growth. Against this background, The Challenge of Youth Employment in Sri Lanka aims to identify ways to improve the opportunities available to new job m

The engineering profession has evolved considerably from the early engineers who were, almost without exception, employed in the making of war or in the defense of nations. Civil engineering emerged in the 18th century, providing an alternative for many engineers, and today there is a strong movement in the development of "peace engineering" – the pro-active use of engineering skills in the promotion of peace. Engineering Peace and Justice: The Responsibility of Engineers to Society details the history of the profession, including its ethical commitment to the public good, and shows how engineers have, in the past, served their clients as either military or civilian engineers. As well as presenting a discussion of the evolution of engineering, the book also examines concepts of ethical engineering, including the engineer’s duty to society; engineering’s relationship to war and peace; and the engineer’s commitment to the environment. The final section details some stories of contemporary engineers who have used their technical skills in the promotion of peace, becoming "peace engineers". Engineering Peace and Justice: The Responsibility of Engineers to Society will be of interest to anyone involved in the engineering profession. Students contemplating careers in engineering will also find this book an inspiring guide to more vocational roles in the field.

Given the emphasis on transforming professional work through the adoption of enquiry-based and trans-disciplinary approaches to service development, there is an urgent need for those involved in professional education to develop a robust understanding of how changes in practice occur. A more inclusive approach to the analysis of the processes involved across the varied and interrelated contexts in which they occur is thus very timely. In this book, Jenny Reeves sets out to explore the gap between the experience of professional learning as an interactive, dynamic and socially contextualised process, and descriptions that are often individualistic, overly linear and largely context-free. She makes the claim that this disjuncture is the outcome of modes of enquiry that concentrate on limited selections of the available data. Adopting a relational approach to describing practice-based professional development, including graphical means for exploring the spaces produced by the activity, provides a very different picture. It creates a basis for representing the complex movements, relationships and interactions between people and things that occur during professional learning. It also provides a productive approach to describing the exchange and creation of professional knowledge across different contexts over time. By building a picture of the ephemeral spaces and connections that educating activities produce, mapping relational space allows those engaged in professional education to think rather differently about how professional learning and changes in knowledge and practice may be understood, supported and developed.

The European Union’s Lisbon strategy, which aims to make the region the most competitive and dynamic knowledge economy in the world, has given a much higher profile to tertiary education institutions outside the traditional university sector in a number of member states. With the EU looking to maximize these colleges’ contribution to the Union’s development, their role is now very much on the political agenda. Yet there is a dearth of information about the extent of research in this sector, on research conditions and research capability, and on the results of this activity. This book sets out to fill this gap. Its purpose is to provide an overview of the state of the art of research in these institutions through focusing on eight selected European countries: Belgium, the Czech Republic, Finland, Germany, Ireland, the Netherlands, Norway and Switzerland. The text shows that while more and more of these ‘technical colleges’, ‘polytechnics’ and their equivalents have been given government funding for research, as higher education institutions outside the university sector they are faced with many challenges in their efforts to develop this aspect of their academic brief. Their growing research arms have led to more complex interactions with universities, both in differential terms—a specific research mandate oriented towards the regional economy and the quality of teaching and professional practice—and convergence, as the research moves towards fulfilling traditional academic standards. The book’s four sections introduce the sector in general, along with some of the key issues facing it; set out some of the transnational aspects of the sector’s research mission; detail the state of the art in each of the EU countries covered; and assess the challenges and opportunities that these colleges may encounter in the future. Aimed at scholars and policymakers alike, this much-needed addition to the literature provides key information that will aid the development of a group of education institutions seen as full of potential for the future.

This book seeks to develop the philosophy of Heidegger notion and reflects the growing importance of work based studies which is becoming of special interest to higher education institutions and commercial organisations. The author acknowledges the dominance of the economic discourse of higher education, but in this book he tries to argue that Heidegger offers a phenomenological approach to understanding the diversity to higher education that work based learning can bring. The book offers a structured argument for a phenomenological understanding of both the educational institution and the commercial environment to be considered as workplaces.
