Abstract

Thermophysical properties of high-temperature materials are important from both the scientific and engineering points of view. This book includes the latest developments in the measurements of atomic structure, density, surface tension, viscosity, heat capacity, thermal and mass diffusivity, thermal conductivity, emissivity, and electrical conductivity of mainly metallic melts. High-temperature measurements are difficult due to high chemical reactivity and fluidity. Some distinctive inventions on the experimental techniques such as levitation technique combined with microgravity, synchrotron radiation or magnetic field enable high-precision measurements. This book is the perfect choice for specialists and nonspecialists eager to know the cutting-edge details in this field.

Abstract

Abstract

Today's wireless communications and information systems are heavily based on microwave technology, as are an increasing number of other industry sectors. Extensive research has been carried out into the development of new technologies to meet the increasingly complex requirements of such systems. Among these new technologies agile (tuneable, reconfigurable, and adaptable) microwave components based on ferroelectric materials, have great potential and are already gaining ground. Ferroelectrics in Microwave Devices, Circuits and Systems is an introduction to the field. It explores the emergence of new functionalities and components with enhanced performance that can meet the agility and cost requirements of modern microwave-based systems. The book provides the reader with practical knowledge in a range of areas, including: ¢ physics, ¢ fabrication technology, ¢ methods of design, ¢ modeling, and ¢ measurement of ferroelectric components and devices. Ferroelectrics in Microwave Devices, Circuits and Systems is a useful research tool for both graduate and undergraduate students, as well as designers of microwave devices, circuits, and systems. The Engineering Materials and Processes series focuses on all forms of materials and the processes used to synthesise and formulate them as they relate to the various engineering disciplines. The series deals with a diverse range of materials: ceramics; metals (ferrous and non-ferrous); semiconductors; composites, polymers, biomimetics etc. Each monograph in the series is written by a specialist and demonstrates how enhancements in materials and the processes associated with them can improve performance in the field of engineering in which they are used.

Abstract

Machining with Nanomaterials focuses on the application of thin film nanostructures to the solution of machining problems. The solution to machining materials in an environmentally conscious manner is to use newly developed thin film superlattice layer coatings that provide a means to eliminate the use of flood cooling and the associated peripheral equipment. The practical significance of the development of these coatings is related to eliminating the need for cooling and lubrication by fluids and the need to machine at ever increasing cutting speeds. The effects of reducing tool life is a particular challenge in high speed machining, and Machining with Nanomaterials explains how coatings can improve tool life and reduce machining costs in an environmentally acceptable way. Drawing upon years of practical experience and using numerous examples and illustrative applications Mark Jackson and Jonathan Morrell discuss: The nature of lubrication and cooling between workpiece and tool The significant nanoscale coatings currently available for use The latest experiments conducted on industrial alloys and workpiece materials How coatings are deposited and qualified The importance of the proper design of cutting tools, including milling tools, single point turning tools and micro cutting tools. Machining with Nanomaterials will be of interest to material scientists, academic researchers, and industrial engineers interested in or currently developing machining techniques using nanomaterials and working in the fields of nanotechnology and nanomanufacturing.
