Abstract

Bioinformation Discovery illustrates the power of biological data in knowledge discovery. It describes biological data types and representations with examples for creating a workflow in Bioinformation discovery. The concepts in knowledge discovery from data are illustrated using line diagrams. The principles and concepts in knowledge discovery are used for the development of prediction models for simulations of biological reactions and events. Advanced topics in molecular evolution and cellular & molecular biology are addressed using Bioinformation gleaned through discovery. Each chapter contains approximately 10 exercises for practice. This will help students to expand their problem solving skills in Bioinformation Discovery. Each chapter concludes with a number of good problem sets to test mastery of the material.

Abstract

Over a decade ago, a small cellular protein of 12 kDa, with 18% homology to the well-known ubiquitin protein, was co-discovered and termed Small Ubiquitin-like Modifier, or SUMO. Sumoylation is a post-translational modification that utilizes SUMO as the modifier group covalently attached to target substrates. This state-of-the art review on the sumoylation system deals with protein modification as it pertains to regulation of diverse cellular functions. Each chapter has been written by a leading researcher and covers the role of sumoylation in fundamental biochemical activities (transcription, RNA processing, chromatin remodelling, DNA repair, nucleocytoplasmic transport, ion channel regulation, and metabolic pathways). The text also examines the part sumoylation plays in critical cellular processes such as mitosis, meiosis, differentiation, senescence, and apoptosis. Lastly, the emerging role of sumoylation in specific diseases, including cancer and diabetes as well as neurodegenerative ones, is explored with an emphasis on defining molecular mechanisms that may provide new targets for treatment or prevention. While SUMO was discovered more than 10 years ago, this is still a relatively young field, and much remains to be discovered about the biochemical and biological properties of this modification system. In just the last few years, it has become clear that sumoylation modifies hundreds of cellular proteins, and there has been increased appreciation for the breadth of cellular functions that are impacted by this post-translational modification.

Abstract

This volume comprises papers presented at the 40th Erice Course From Molecules to Medicine: Structure of Biological Macromolecules and Its Relevance in Combating New Diseases and Bioterrorism , May 29 to June 8, 2008. The papers span the breadth of material presented, which emp- size the practical aspects of modern macromolecular crystallography and its applications to medicine. Topics addressed span from the selection of targets, through to structure determination, interpretation and exploitation. A particular theme that emerges is the dependence of modern structural science on multiple experimental and computational techniques. It is both the development of these techniques and their integration that will take us forward in the future. The NATO ASI directors worked alongside, and offer deep gratitude to Prof. Sir Tom Blundell, Director of the International School of Crystal- graphy, Dr Colin Groom, Dr Neera Borkakoti, Dr John Irwin and Prof. Lodovico Riva di Sanseverino, who were in turn supported by a number of local facilitators. The course was financed by NATO as an Advanced Study Institute. Additional support was given by the European Crystallographic Association, the International Union of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, the Int- national Union of Crystallography, the University of Bologna, AstraZeneca, Roche, Merck & Co., Boehringer Ingelheim, Bruker Corporation, Douglas Instruments, Informa UK, the Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry, TTP Lab Tech, University of California at San Francisco.
