Tiere faszinierten die Menschen seit jeher so stark, dass Gottheiten Tiergestalt zugedacht und überhöhte Fabelwesen in der Welt der Mythen und Märchen angesiedelt wurden. Tiere können gefährlich, aber auch Gefährten, Wächter und Freunde sein; sie lieferten Nahrung, Kleidung, Schmuck, vielfältige Werkstoffe oder dienten als Transportmittel. Viele dieser Betrachtungsweisen von Tieren sind in den neuesten "Kulturgeschichtlichen Spaziergang im GNM" eingeflossen. Die 19 Beiträge spannen einen Bogen von Mythen und Jagden der Vorzeit bis zur zeitgenössischen Darstellung von Dinosauriern und verknüpfen kaleidoskopartig Beispiele der kunst- und kulturgeschichtlichen Auseinandersetzung mit dem Thema Tier aus den verschiedenen Sammlungsbereichen des GNM. Die vielfältigen Beiträge mit zahlreichen, fast durchgängig farbigen Abbildungen dürften manch überraschenden und neuen Blick auf scheinbar vertraute Werke des GNM bieten - selbst für interessierte und häufige Besucher unseres Hauses.

A due anni dall’inaugurazione del Museo della Natura Morta di Poggio a Caiano (avvenuta il 17 giugno 2007), vede la luce il catalogo completo dei dipinti esposti nelle sedici sale del secondo piano della villa medicea. La pubblicazione del catalogo scientifico della collezione di un museo rappresenta non solo un contributo essenziale per la conoscenza del patrimonio in esso custodito, e quindi per la sua piena valorizzazione, ma al contempo un significativo strumento per la tutela delle sue opere d’arte, nel quale sono messi a disposizione dati, informazioni e conoscenze indispensabili per la loro corretta conservazione e protezione. Rivolgendosi sia agli specialisti che ad un pubblico più ampio, il catalogo completo di una collezione d’arte costituisce forse il momento principale e riassuntivo della missione di ricerca, di studio e di corretta divulgazione che deve caratterizzare ogni istituzione museale moderna. Due anni per la preparazione di un catalogo che illustra in 159 schede le 196 opere esposte nel museo. Qui sono esposti i Cedri di Filippo Napoletano, o l’importante serie di tele di soggetto botanico di Bartolomeo Bimbi eseguite per il granduca Cosimo III. La splendida Ghirlanda di Bartolomeo Bimbi, opera fondamentale per la ricostruzione del collezionismo mediceo di natura morta, le Ciliegie di Giovanna Garzoni e la Ghirlanda di Margherita Caffi, l’importantissimo Vaso di fiori di Jan Brueghel dei Velluti, l’unica opera di questo genere del grande artista fiammingo presente a Firenze.

This book provides an in-depth exploration of Walton Ford's oeuvre. It also includes a complete professional biography as well as substantial excerpts from the textual sources for the paintings, from Vietnamese folktales and the letters of Benjamin Franklin to the Autobiography of Benvenuto Cellini and John James Audubon's Ornithological Biography .
