George Orwell said that all writing is political; but the writers of some nations and some periods are more political than others. German writers after 1945 have exemplified such heightened politicization, and this book considers their contribution to the democratic development of Germany by looking principally at their directly political, non-fictional writings. It pays particular attention to writers and the student movement of the 1960s and '70s, when some proclaimed the death of literature and called for a turn to direct political action. Yet writers in both parts of Germany gradually came to identify with their respective states, even if the idea of one Germany never entirely disappeared. The unification of 1989-1990, in which this idea astonishingly became reality, posed a major (and some would say unmet) challenge to writers in both East and West. After looking at this period of intense political activities, the book considers the continuing East/West division and changing attitudes to the Nazi past, asking whether the intellectual climate has swung to the right. It also asks to what extent political involvement has been a generational project for the immediate postwar generation and is less important for younger writers who see the Federal Republic as a 'normal' democratic state. Stuart Parkes is Emeritus Professor of German from the University of Sunderland (UK).

Die Wilhelminische Epoche und die Katastrophe des Ersten Weltkrieges waren für die Entwicklung von Theodor Heuss in vielfacher Hinsicht prägend. Als Schüler und Student sowie später als Redakteur und Publizist machte er Erfahrungen und knüpfte Kontakte, die für seine weitere Karriere bestimmend werden sollten. Dabei war die Politik neben der Kunst, der Literatur und der Wissenschaft nur ein Gebiet, in dem er sich besonders engagierte. In allen diesen Bereichen befürwortete er einen Aufbruch aus dem beengend, rückständig und obrigkeitsstaatlich empfundenen Kaiserreich. Während Heuss seinen Briefpartnern zunächst als ungemein lebenslustiger, geistvoller und zuweilen übermütiger Jugendlicher begegnete, erscheint er später als umfassend gebildeter, humorvoller und verantwortungsbewusster Journalist und Familienvater.In den 228 ausgewählten Briefen von Heuss spiegeln sich seine abwechslungsreiche Biographie und die spannungsreichen Zeitläufte der Jahre 1892-1917. Sie sind das Zeugnis eines virtuosen Briefschreibers, der schon als junger Mensch mit wichtigen Zeitgenossen korrespondierte: mit Politikern, Publizisten, Schriftstellern und Künstlern.

Under the National Socialist regime, Theodor Heuss was rapidly forced onto the defensive. He lost nearly all his public offices and posts, yet as a publicist Heuss continued to defend his liberal convictions. We encounter a member of the educated middle classes who attempted to carve out space for himself in a hostile political environment. These 194 selected letters, most of them previously unknown, reflect his gripping biography and the dramatic course of events from the handing over of power to the National Socialists in January 1933 to the end of the war in 1945.

Chaque année, des centaines de livres paraissent qui traitent de tel aspect peu connu, de tel pan ignoré du Troisième Reich, livres qui viennent grossir la bibliographie considérable - près de 40 000 titres - qui existe sur le sujet. Comment le non-spécialiste peut-il se repérer dans cette masse? C'est précisément au lecteur curieux des travaux les plus récents sur le nazisme, mais craignant de s'y noyer, que s'adresse le livre de Richard Evans. "Das Urheberrecht steckt in der Krise: Wir schützen immer mehr, wissen immer weniger warum und werden dabei insbesondere den Interessen kreativ-schöpferischer Werknutzer im digitalen Umfeld immer weniger gerecht. Der Ruf nach rechtstheoretischer Neuorientierung und einer grundlegenden Revision des Urheberrechts ist dementsprechend laut. Diese Arbeit widmet sich daher den Grundlagen und Gestaltungsoptionen urheberrechtlicher Regulierung im digitalen Zeitalter unter besonderer Berücksichtigung des Nutzerschutzes. Zu diesem Zweck werden schwerpunktmäßig kollektivistisch-utilitaristische Rechtfertigungsansätze untersucht, sodass neben den in Kontinentaleuropa traditionell stärker verbreiteten individualistischen Begründungsansätzen primär ökonomietheoretische, demokratie- und kulturtheoretische Rechtfertigungsbemühungen gewürdigt werden. Aufbauend auf diesen rechtstheoretischen Überlegungen entwickelt der Verfasser ein eigenes Erklärungsmodell, auf dessen Grundlage sich das Urheberrecht im Allgemeinen und die von ihm propagierte Nutzerschutzdoktrin im Besonderen rechtfertigen lassen.
