Abstract

Topics in Number 46 include: Comprehensive review of the structural aspects and anti-corrosion properties of passive films on metals and alloys; a detailed description is given of the nucleation and growth of 2-dimensional passive films at earlier stages, their effect on the corrosion properties of metal surfaces, and the nanostructures of 3-dimensional passive films Research on nano- and micro-fabrications based on anodizing treatments combined with chemical/mechanical processes such as laser irradiation, atomic force micro-probe processing, and thin film deposition techniques Passivity of aluminum-based amorphous alloys and stainless steels and the catalytic activity of copper-based amorphous alloys Theoretical analysis of the admittance behavior of passive film/electrolyte junction based on the theory of amorphous semiconductor Schottky barriers From reviews of previous volumes: "This long-standing series continues its tradition of offering high quality reviews of established and emerging subject areas, together with the less common aspects of electrochemical science... [and]... deserves a place in electrochemistry libraries and should prove useful to electrochemists and related workers." Chemistry and Industry "Continues the valuable service that has been rendered by the Modern Aspects series." Journal of Electroanalytical Chemistry "Will definitely be of much use to researchers in the field of electrochemistry. . . . The editors of this well-produced volume deserve all appreciation for maintaining the excellent standard of the series." Bulletin of Electrochemistry "Extremely well-referenced and very readable.... Maintains the overall high standards of the series." Journal of the American Chemical Society

Abstract

Service Life Prediction of Polymeric Materials: Global Perspectives combines content developed from topics discussed in the Fourth International Symposium on Service Life Prediction (Key Largo, Florida, December 2006). This critical examination of existing and alternative methodologies for evaluation of the service life of polymeric materials presents readers with the advances in accelerated and field exposure testing protocols. Written by established experts in the service life community, this volume introduces advanced test methods, including high throughput and combinatorial analyses, and decision support systems having a strong scientific basis. Researchers, engineers, and coatings technologists involved with materials and polymer science will find Service Life Prediction of Polymeric Materials: Global Perspectives a useful reference.

Abstract

Thin calcium phosphate coatings of about 10 µm or less can improve the bone response in orthopedic and dental implants by overcoming the drawbacks of commercially successful, thick plasma-sprayed coatings. These alternative coatings have shown better adhesion to a variety of substrates and, because of their uniformity in structure and composition, greater stability in the biological environment. Thin Calcium Phosphate Coatings for Medical Implants presents a comprehensive, state-of-the-art review of the preparation, physico-chemical properties, and in vitro and in vivo performance of these bioactive coatings, including comparisons with thick plasma-sprayed techniques. Emphasis is also placed on the benefits of special characterization techniques for this type of thin coating. This book is an essential resource not only for biomaterials researchers and their students, but also for engineers in the design, development, and manufacture of medical implants.
