Abstract

Abstract

Cognitive impairment in older adults usually progresses slowly and is caused by a variety of brain diseases, most commonly Alzheimer's disease. The resulting memory loss and impaired executive function call for therapeutic strategies that will optimize functioning. Interpersonal Psychotherapy for Cognitive Impairment (IPT-ci), builds upon traditional IPT to improve coping ability and help older patients and their caregivers manage the effects of cognitive impairment, particularly in the early phase when behavior changes are often misunderstood. IPT-ci can also provide a template for long term

Abstract

"In Psychodynamic Perspectives on Aging and Illness, Tamara McClintock Greenberg provides the medical and psychological community with an exceptionally incisive and truly groundbreaking tour de force. Dr. Greenberg has illuminated the factors implicated in health and illness with a clear and concise perspective culled from the best of contemporary psychoanalytic psychology in a manner not previously accomplished. This work will be valued by all who come into contact with illness, suffering, pain, aging and death. With clearly elucidated concepts, vivid clinical examples and the benefit of her own personal narrative, the book is both compelling and educative. For those who work in medical settings, especially in health psychology and consultation liaison psychiatry, this text presents the definitive study of the nature of the experience of caring for sick people in our society. It will be required reading for a long time to come." -Marilyn S. Jacobs, Ph.D., ABPP, David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA Medical Center, Los Angeles, CA More than ever, the aging process is recognized as carrying a special set of emotional challenges–especially when acute or chronic medical conditions are involved. In this light, Psychodynamic Perspectives on Aging and Illness presents a fresh, contemporary application of psychodynamic theory, addressing the complex issues surrounding declining health. Informed by the spectrum of psychodynamic thought from self, relational, and classical theories, this forward looking volume offers more modern interpretations of theory, and techniques for working with a growing, complicated, but surprisingly resilient population. It illuminates how to enhance the therapeutic relationship in key areas such as addressing body- and self-image issues, approach sensitive topics, and understand the disconnect that can occur between medical patients and the often impersonal, technology-driven health care system. At the same time, the author cogently argues for pluralism in a therapeutic approach that is frequently threatened by forces both within and outside the field. Among the topics covered: Medical illness as trauma. Idealization and the culture of medicine. Normative and pathological narcissism in the ill and/or aging patient. Noncompliant and self-destructive behaviors. Transference and countertransference issues. Psychotherapy with cognitively impaired adults. Grief, loss, and hope. Expanding on what we know and candid about what we don’t, Psychodynamic Perspectives on Aging and Illness offers mental health researchers and practitioners an insightful framework for improving the lives of older patients.

Abstract

At a time when the mental health difficulties/disorders of the elderly are coming to the fore of many practitioners' patient rosters, naming and treating those problems is still too often handled as an art as much as a science. Inconsistent practices based on clinical experience and intuition rather than hard scientific evidence of efficacy have for too long been the basis of much treatment. Evidence-based practices help to alleviate some of the confusion, allowing the practitioner to develop quality practice guidelines that can be applied to the client, identify appropriate literature that ca

Abstract

Geropsychology and Long Term Care A Practitioner’s Guide Edited by Erlene Rosowsky, Boston, MA, Joseph M. Casciani, San Diego, CA, and Merla Arnold, Huntington Station, NY Among the growing population living in nursing homes and assisted-living communities, emotional and behavioral problems are frequently undiagnosed and unaddressed. Increased interest in these elders’ quality of life has brought geropsychology to the fore as a major specialty, as evinced by Psychologists in Long-Term Care (PLTC). This organization has been instrumental in establishing standards for appropriate, respectful, and ethical care, and developing education and training resources for professionals. Geropsychology and Long Term Care is just such a resource, aimed at practitioners at all levels of experience, regardless of theoretical orientation. The contributors, all experts affiliated with PLTC, offer coverage that is up-to-date, readily accessible, and eminently useful, whether the reader needs information on bedrock skills, multidisciplinary treatment, privacy issues, or the way facilities are run. Among the topics covered: Common psychological disorders in long-term care, and their prevalence. Federal policy issues affecting care delivery. Funding and referral processes in nursing homes. Assessment tools commonly used with elders in long-term care. Treatment plans and process, including the integration of psychiatric medicine into therapy. Types of LTC providers, their training, and their roles in multidisciplinary care. Outcomes measurement and Medicare documentation. Geropsychology and Long Term Care serves a variety of purposes: a meticulous introduction for the new (or new-to-the-specialty) clinician, a practical update for the seasoned professional, a helpful teaching manual for the trainer, a critical adjunct for the trainee.
