Le fonds de gravures du Cabinet des Estampes de la Bibliothèque royale de Belgique témoigne de la grande richesse thématique des gravures réalisées au cours du XVIIe siècle. La présente exposition permettra au visiteur de découvrir un large éventail de genres qui donnent en même temps une image vivante de la société : estampes à caractère politique, gravures représentant les portraits de personnalités diverses, gravures reproduisant des tableaux, estampes à thèse, gravures allégoriques et estampes au contenu mythologique ou religieux. This book shiifts the focus toward three collaborators of Rubens who - each in his own way - made an essential contribution to the printmaking industry in the Southern Netherlands. During the 17th century Antwerp was one of several printmaking centres in Europe. Between these centres there existed a lively exchange of specialized labour (mobility of engravers) and goods (prints). Thanks to intense contact, technical innovations (like mezzotint) were also disseminated. Print publishers in the various cities had different profiles and strategies, and the prints on offer could also differ from city to city.
