Abstract

Valvular Heart Disease is now an even better source for all your questions on dysfunctions or abnormalities of the heart's four valves. In the third edition, Catherine Otto is joined by Robert Bonow and a team of expert contributors to bring you the latest developments in imaging and treatment. The full-color images and illustrations reflect the cutting-edge imaging and diagnostic modalities-Doppler echo and MR-that are so important for diagnosing aortic valve defects. Superb diagrams, an increased focus on imaging and case-based presentation, and new chapters-on Cardiac MR and CT imaging for

Abstract

Challenges for the treatment of valvular heart disease include the growing need for effective yet less invasive interventions and therapies to treat these progressive conditions. With the development of potential new treatments, it is crucial for cardiac physicians to be well informed on the pathophysiology, assessment, treatment options and their outcomes of valvular diseases. Written by a highly experienced and internationally recognized group of cardiologists, cardiac surgeons, and researchers, Valvular Heart Disease offers insights into the widely varying hemodynamic effects and clinical course of heart valve conditions, as well as the contemporary management of these conditions. Offering a broad perspective on these diseases, Valvular Heart Disease expands on the recent guidelines developed by the major heart societies in the United States and Europe.

Abstract

Major advances in the management of heart valve diseases have occurred in the past three decades. Doppler echocardiography has become the cornerstone for accurate assessment of valve disease, even allowing identification of disease progression. Surgical treatment of valve disease has also witnessed great advances, having moved from traditional valve replacement to sophisticated repair procedures, with robotic cardiac surgery also showing promising results. Furthermore, in special circumstances, with conventional surgical valve excision has now been being replaced by percutaneous catheter-based valve replacement for aortic and pulmonary disease. This approach reduces the risk from the surgery itself, avoids general anesthesia and many potential postoperative complications. Valvular Heart Disease in Clinical Practice includes chapters from a distinguished panel of contributors looking at the practicalities of diagnosing and treating common heart valve diseases and covering all of the standard clinical and surgical issues. It is designed to assist in the management of patients with valve disease and provide cardiologists, cardiac surgeons, intensivists, and emergency medicine physicians with answers to the clinical questions that arise in their practice.
