Adam Smith est communément tenu pour fondateur du libéralisme économique. Or il est bien autre chose encore : un philosophe dont l'économie ne se comprend que dans le cadre d'une vaste réflexion sur la nature humaine. C'est à retracer les aspects moraux et politiques de cette philosophie que s'attache le présent ouvrage. La première partie étudie le cœur de la pensée de Smith, sa philosophie morale, centrée sur le concept de sentiments moraux. Elle revient sur la fonction incontournable de la sympathie, mécanisme affectif fondateur des rapports humains.
