De la fin du VIIIe au début du Xe siècle, l'Europe fut bouleversée par les incursions des Vikings. Piraterie, pillages, déportations et cruautés en tous genres accompagnaient leurs déplacements, au point que les textes de l'époque n'hésitent pas à les compter parmi les cavaliers de l'Apocalypse. Réduire leur histoire à l'énumération de leurs méfaits ne peut cependant satisfaire ceux qui cherchent à comprendre comment, à partir des années 900, les Vikings s'insérèrent dans l'Europe chrétienne. Relisant les sources, Pierre Bauduin montre que la chronique des violences est aussi celle des entreprises menées alors de part et d'autre pour préparer l'accueil dans le monde franc de populations jusque-là périphériques qui, au gré de leurs dynamiques propres ou de leurs contacts avec l'Empire carolingien, étaient susceptibles de s'y faire une place. Emissaires, missionnaires, transfuges ou renégats côtoient d'autres intermédiaires qui, selon des modalités parfois inavouables, assurèrent la mise en contact des deux camps. Ainsi se renouvelle l'image d'une histoire, qui n'est pas seulement celle d'une agression, mais aussi, de manière plus profonde et durable, celle d'une prise de contact suivie d'une intégration réussie.
