Abstract

In 1857, the successful Scottish phrenologist George Combe published a book condemning religious dogmatism and advocating the study of science to discover divine laws through nature. In it, he defended phrenology, the belief that character traits are determined by configurations of the skull, against attacks from scientists and theologians.
