La ricerca a fronte della sfida ambientale, the third volume in the DOTTA series, this publication documents the third edition of the Osdotta seminar co-ordinated by the Polytechnic of Milan, held in Lecco on 12-13-14 September 2007. The acronym of the Monitoring Centre of the Doctorate in Architectural Technology (Osservatorio del Dottorato in Tecnologia dell'Architettura), Osdotta was generated by the need to create a space for cultural exchange in relation to research contents and methods pertinent to technological disciplines. An experience acknowledged as a site of scientific interconnection and networked structure, it sets itself the goal of exploring the complexity of the research on multiple scales, investigating and focusing emerging issues and studying the national training scenario so as to boost the professional level of the research. The 2007 edition of the national seminar demonstrates the consolidation of an inter-site education/training experiment of an innovative character that materialises in the rendering of the results of exchange and dialogue on a theme with a wealth of faceted values: the environment, in the form of a challenge that explores the relation with technology.

"Japanese Identities takes us on a journey to the most magnificent buildings in Japan, from the 7th century A.D to the present day. They range from meditative temples, shrines and gardens to contemporary architecture designed by Kengo Kuma, Kenzo Tange or Kazuyo Sejima for the country's modern big cities. Above all, it is possible to experience the fascinating juxtaposition of tradition and the modern age that characterises the country: the traditional principles of natural- and openness, the particular aesthetics of omission, continue to be omnipresent in the contemporary high-tech buildings. The very personal texts and photographs by the Japanese architect Yuichiro Edagawa make this book into a declaration of love for Japan. This diverse, inspiring publication is a pleasure to read, whether as a travel guide, an introduction to Japanese culture and history, or an architectural picture book."--Jacket.

Significant changes are occurring in the social spaces of modern cities and the social functioning of media. This book argues that the spaces and rhythms of contemporary cities are radically different to those described in classic theories of urbanism. Changes in the city have been paralleled by the transformation of media which has become increasingly mobile, instantaneous and pervasive. The media are no longer separate from the city.

The Lausanne architects Mann Capua Mann have been active since 1991. Their mottoes are: Distill the answers for the concrete project from the elements on site. Design spaces that, for all their dynamism, are organized in a manner that is clear to the users. Utilize materials that are in harmony with the surroundings. Their structures are compelling thanks to the variety of their views, the diversity of their light effects, and the expressive simplicity of their spatial effects. This monograph is being published in the Collection Archigraphy Lémaniques, which is under the general editorship of Bruno Marchand. It offers for the first time a solidly based and thoroughgoing overview of the activity of the firm, which has distinguished itself in the Western Swiss architecture scene with its small but sophisticated body of work. Graeme Mann and Patricia Capua Mann are founding members of the Forum d'Architectures de Lausanne. In the 2006/07 semester, they served as visiting professors at the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL).

50 years after the 1st Oxford Conference on Architectural Education, the 2008 Conference brought together over 500 people from 42 countries to share best practice, discuss how, when, where and why we teach architecture now and in the future. The eleven conference Forums covered a range of topics including Buildings and the Environment; Sustaining Studio Education in a Climate of Change; Human Habitat and Social Responsibility; Refurbishment and Evidence Based Education; Research into Teaching Courses; Urban Design and Sustainable Cities; Schools and Professional Views; Materials and Renewable Energy; Virtual Building and Generative Design; Design Research Courses and Curricula. This volume brings you short essays from all Forums from speakers like Christopher Alexander, Rab Bennetts, Nina Maritz and Paul Oliver. There are ideas here that will appeal to all points of view but they are singular in that within them all is a clarion call for the need for new approaches to the way in which the design of buildings is taught in Schools of Architecture around the world.

The quintessential Renaissance Man, Leonardo da Vinci was well aware of the fundamental importance of mathematics for architecture. This issue of the Nexus Network Journal examines Leonardo’s knowledge of theoretical mathematics, explores how he used concepts of geometry in his designs for architectural projects, and reports on a real-life construction project using Leonardo’s principles. Authors include Sylvie Duvernoy, Kim Williams, Rinus Roelofs, Biagio Di Carlo, Mark Reynolds, João Pedro Xavier, Vesna Petresin, Christopher Glass, and Jane Burry. To complete the issue Rachel Fletcher writes her Geometer’s Angle column on "Dynamic Symmetry", Michael Ostwald reviews A Theory of General Ethics by Warwick Fox, Sarah Clough Edwards reviews Inigo Jones and the Classical Tradition by Christy Anderson, and Sylvie Duvernoy reviews Architecture and Mathematics in Ancient Egypt by Corinna Rossi.

Gert Wingårdh and Rasmus Wærn, Sweden's most active architect and its best-known architecture critic, made a selection of approximately fifty terms and concepts, including Branding, Collaborators, Corporate, Desire, Future, Everyday, Ornament, and Wheelchair. The result is a very special dictionary with humorous illustrations and original articles. The conditions in which present-day architecture is produced are partly local and singular and partly global and universal. Understanding contemporary architecture means understanding all of these aspects. What are the pivotal themes? Gert Wingårdh and Rasmus Wærn, Sweden's most active architect and its best-known architecture critic, asked themselves this question and made a selection of approximately fifty terms and concepts, including Branding, Collaborators, Corporate, Desire, Future, Everyday, Ornament, and Wheelchair. The result is a very special dictionary with humorous illustrations and original articles by interesting protagonists such as Denise Scott Brown, Kenneth Frampton, Massimiliano Fuksas, Hans Ibelings, Peter Blundell Jones, Vittorio Magnago Lampugnani, Hans Ulrich Obrist, Juhani Pallasmaa, Joseph Rykwert, Jaime Salazar, Axel Sowa, and Wilfried Wang. A special highlight is the text by Nobel laureate Ohran Pamuk. Die Voraussetzungen, unter welchen heutige Architektur entsteht, sind teils lokal und einmalig bedingt, teils sind sie von globaler und allgemeingültiger Natur. Zeitgenössische Architektur verstehen heisst, all diese Aspekte verstehen.
