Abstract

This book combines earth science, subsurface hydrology and environmental geochemistry, providing a comprehensive background for specialists interested in the protection and sustainable management of the subsurface environment. The reader is introduced to the chemistry of contaminants, which usually disturb the natural equilibrium in the subsurface as a result of human activity. The major focus of the book is on contaminant reactions in soil solutions, groundwater and porous media solid phases, accounting for their persistence and transformation in the subsurface, as they are transported from the land surface into groundwater. Discussions on selected case studies are provided.

Abstract

The book contains the contributions at the NATO Advanced Research Workshop on Soil Chemical Pollution, Risk Assessment, Remediation and Security, which took place in Sofia, Bulgaria, May 23-26, 2007. Scientists representing fields of chemistry, biology, toxicology, physics, risk assessment, ecology, environmental protection, remediation and public health, from Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Belgium, Bulgaria, Germany, France, Hungary, Italy, Kazakhstan, Moldova, Netherlands, Poland, Romania, Russian Federation, Spain and Ukraine participated in the work of the ARW. The main objective of the ARW was to contribute to the existing knowledge on soil pollution and remediation. Stress was given to: critical assessment of the used analyses and methods for study effects in combined chemical pollution (organic pollutants and pesticides, metals) on soil biota and fertility; to evaluate specific aspects of the risk assessment; to assess the most advanced technologies for soil remediation used for different purposes; to evaluated the economical involvement; to evaluate national policies for soil security in different NATO and partner countries.

Abstract

Carbon and Nitrogen in the Terrestrial Environment is a comprehensive, interdisciplinary description of C and N fluxes between the atmosphere and the terrestrial biosphere; issues related to C and N management in different ecosystems and their implications for the environment and global climate change; and the approaches to mitigate emission of greenhouse gases. Drawing upon the most up-to-date books, journals, bulletins, reports, symposia proceedings and internet sources documenting interrelationships between different aspects of C and N cycling in the terrestrial environment, Carbon and Nitrogen in the Terrestrial Environment fills the gap left by most of the currently available books on C and N cycling. They either deal with a single element of an ecosystem, or are related to one or a few selected aspects like soil organic matter (SOM) and agricultural or forest management, emission of greenhouse gases, global climate change or modeling of SOM dynamics.

Abstract

The group of non-regulated contaminants termed emerging contaminants mainly comprises products used in large quantities in everyday life, such as human and veterinary pharmaceuticals, personal care products, surfactants and surfactant residues, plasticizers and various industrial additives. The occurrence of emerging contaminants in wastewaters, and their behavior during wastewater treatment and production of drinking water are key issues in the re-use of water resources. Emerging Contaminants from Industrial and Municipal Waste focuses on innovative treatment technologies for the elimination of emerging contaminants from wastewater and drinking water. The respective treatment processes, such as membrane bioreactors, photocatalysis, ozonation and advanced oxidation are dealt with in detail. The book also discusses sources and occurrence of emerging contaminants in municipal and industrial waste, giving a concise and critical overview of state-of-the-art analytical methods for their identification. Further important aspects covered by the book include the acute and chronic effects and overall impact of emerging contaminants on the environment.

Abstract

International concern in scienti? c, industrial, and governmental commu- ties over traces of xenobiotics in foods and in both abiotic and biotic en- ronments has justi? ed the present triumvirate of specialized publications in this ? eld: comprehensive reviews, rapidly published research papers and progress reports, and archival documentations. These three international publications are integrated and scheduled to provide the coherency ess- tial for nonduplicative and current progress in a ? eld as dynamic and complex as environmental contamination and toxicology. This series is reserved exclusively for the diversi? ed literature on toxic chemicals in our food, our feeds, our homes, recreational and working surroundings, our domestic animals, our wildlife and ourselves. Tremendous efforts worldwide have been mobilized to evaluate the nature, presence, magnitude, fate, and toxicology of the chemicals loosed upon the earth. Among the sequelae of this broad new emphasis is an undeniable need for an articulated set of authoritative publications, where one can ? nd the latest important world literature produced by these emerging areas of science together with do- mentation of pertinent ancillary legislation. Research directors and legislative or administrative advisers do not have the time to scan the escalating number of technical publications that may contain articles important to current responsibility. Rather, these indiv- uals need the background provided by detailed reviews and the assurance that the latest information is made available to them, all with minimal literature searching.
