Die menschlichen Gefühle sind nicht erst in den letzten Jahren, sondern schon einmal um 1900 verstärkt in das Interesse der Geistes- und Sozialwissenschaften gerückt. Der Band untersucht das Wechselverhältnis von Wissenschaft und Emotionalität in dieser Zeit und zielt dabei neben der Wissenschaftsgeschichte der Gefühle zugleich auf eine Gefühlsgeschichte der Wissenschaften. Die lange Jahrhundertwende von 1880 bis 1930 gilt nicht nur als Formierungsphase der 'klassischen Moderne'. Sie war auch eine Umbruchsphase der modernen Wissenschaften, die vor allen Dingen durch die Trennung von Geistes- und Naturwissenschaften und die Etablierung der Sozialwissenschaften gekennzeichnet war. In diesem Ausdifferenzierungsgeschehen spielte auch die wissenschaftliche Thematisierung der Gefühle eine zentrale Rolle.

La modernité occidentale a construit un homme sensible et façonné les sens et les sentiments et ainsi contribué à privilégier la perception d'une stabilité de l'existence sur quoi se fonde la propriété de soi. Celle-ci est aujourd'hui menacée par la fluidité d'un monde devenu immatériel et dépourvu de limites. In a conversation with his physician, a nineteenth-century resident of Paris who lived near the railroad described sensations of brilliant color generated by the sounds of trains passing in the night. This patient-a synaesthete-experienced "color hearing" for letters, words, and most sounds. Synaesthesia, a phenomenon now known to science for over a century, is a rare form of perception in which one sense may respond to stimuli received by other senses. This fascinating book provides the first historical treatment of synaesthesia and a closely related mode of perception called eideticism. Kevin Dann discusses divergent views of synaesthesia and eideticism over the last hundred years and explores the controversies over the significance of these unusual modes of perception. Celebrated at the turn of the century as a uniquely creative form of consciousness, synaesthesia became embroiled in a debate between Romantics who championed it as a desirable harbinger of a new, more spiritual age, and positivists who denounced it as primitive and irrational. The author debunks Romantic notions of the transcendental nature of synaesthesia and shows that although novelist Vladimir Nabokov was a true synaesthete and eidetic, other individuals the Romantics considered synaesthetes were not. Drawing on studies of autism and hallucinogenic drugs, Dann offers new perspectives on synaesthesia and eideticism and how they relate to the evolution of human consciousness.

Joys and Sorrows of Imaginary Persons is a literary approach to consciousness where Donald Wesling denies that emotion is the scandal or handmaid of reason—rather emotion is the co-creator with reason of human life in the world. Discoveries in neuro-science in the 1990's Decade of the Brain have proven that thinking and feeling are wrapped with each other, and regulate and fulfill each other. Accepting this co-creative equality, we reveal a new role for literature, or a traditional role we’ve repressed: literature as a set of processes in time where we’ve thought feeling through stories about the lives of imaginary persons. We need these stories in order to practice emotions for when we return to the world from reading. Donald Wesling argues that to be more accurate in our dealings with stories, we require a grammar of this new recognition, where we build up traditional stylistics by a more careful tracking of emotion-states as these are set into writing. The first half of Joys and Sorrows of Imaginary Persons offers a creative stock-taking of the current state of scholarship on emotion, based on wide reading in several fields. The second half gives three focused studies, rich in examples, of emotion as cognition, as story, and as historical structure of feeling.
