Abstract

Latinas/os in the United States: Changing the Face of América Edited by Rodríguez, Sáenz & Ménjivar The Latina/o population in the United States has experienced significant and rapid growth during the past decades. Consequently, they have become the largest minority group in the nation. Latinas/os are a mosaic of people, representing different nationalities. They are Mexicans, Hondurans, Puerto Ricans, Argentineans, Cubans, Salvadorans, Dominicans, Panamanians, Guatemalans, Nicaraguans, Peruvians, and Costa Ricans, among others; they are Catholics, Protestants, Jews, and Muslims, but they are also atheists, Santeros/as, and Curanderos/as. Many have relatively high and increasing levels of education, but others have low educational attainment and elevated high school attrition rates. They also have experienced significant economic mobility, yet many others are poor and face multiple forms of inequality. Latinas/os in the United States: Changing the Face of América explores and expands on these and other critical topics. This book also addresses important theoretical and methodological issues related to the study of Latinas/os and presents in-depth analyses (both quantitative and qualitative) of substantive issues relevant to this population, including migration, demographic patterns and processes, education, health, citizenship, political participation, religion, gender and sex roles, literary and cultural production, and the media. The authors seek to educate and increase awareness of the diversity that exists among the Latina/o population, and to carefully examine the social, economic, demographic, cultural, and political impacts and contributions that this growing population has had in the United States. The edited volume presents a holistic and multidisciplinary perspective of this group, and it critically documents how Latinas and Latinos have changed and will continue to change the face of América.

Abstract

In recent years there has been a wealth of new research in cognition, particularly in relation to supporting theoretical constructs about how cognitions are formed, processed, reinforced, and how they then affect behavior. Many of these theories have arisen and been tested in geographic isolation. It remains to be seen whether theories that purport to describe cognition in one culture will equally prove true in other cultures. The Handbook of Motivation and Cognition Across Cultures is the first book to look at these theories specifically with culture in mind. The book investigates univ

Abstract

"These essays by one of anthropology's most original theorists consider such fundamental questions as: Is cognition language-based? How reliable a guide to memory are people's narratives about themselves? What connects the 'social recalling? studied by anthropologists to the? autobiographical memory? studied by psychologists? Now gathered in accessible form for the first time and drawing frequently upon the author's fieldwork among the Zafimaniry of Madagascar for ethnographic examples, the twelve closely linked essays of How We Think They Think pose provocative challenges not only to conventional cognitive models but to the basic assumptions that underlie much of ethnography. This book will be read with interest by those who study culture and cognition, ethnographic theory and practice, and the peoples and cultures of Africa."--Provided by publisher.

Abstract

Crises do not occur in cultural vacuums, but help often does. Good intentions are not enough. Lack of cultural understanding, sensitivity, and competencies can hamper and even harm the professional response to disasters. To help and heal, one must know and understand the cultural background of disaster victims. Ethnocultural Perspectives on Disaster and Trauma offers readers substantive knowledge in these three vital areas of disaster response. In this pioneering volume, experts on individual and collective trauma experience, posttraumatic stress and related syndromes, and emergency and crisis intervention – share knowledge and insights on the cultural context of working with ethnic and racial minority communities during disasters. In each chapter, emotional, psychological, and social needs as well as communal strengths and coping skills that arise in disasters are documented for major minority groups in the United States including specific chapters on African Americans, Native Americans, Arab Americans, Asian Indians, Chinese Americans, Caribbean Americans, Latin Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Vietnamese Americans. Each chapter features information on: Demographics, major historical events, and core values of each population Important cultural insights, including communication styles, culture-specific disorders, and valid assessment instruments Therapeutic and healing traditions versus conventional medicine and therapy Perspectives specific to the population’s experience with disaster and trauma Authors’ recommendations for improving services to the population Practical appendices for readers new to the field This unique volume is a cultural competency compendium that will increase to the effectiveness of all who respond to disasters. It will also be of interest and value to scholars, policy makers, and health professionals working in the areas of disaster management, crisis intervention, and trauma. Ethnocultural Perspectives on Disaster and Trauma points readers to what the editors call the path "beyond simple assistance to healing and the restoration of hope and meaning.".

Abstract

Beliefs about nature of knowledge and learning, or epistemological beliefs have been an interest of educational researchers and psychologists for the past several years. New perspectives on theoretical, conceptual and methodological approaches and empirical studies on epistemological beliefs are emerging in the literature as a well-defined field of study. Studies show that personal epistemology has influence on comprehension, study strategies, learning process and academic performance. Research in this area has undergone considerable growth in the past decades and has now reached a stage of notable diversity and internationalization. Bringing together prominent educators and researchers, this book focuses on conceptual and methodical issues and state-of-the-art theoretical understanding on epistemological beliefs from educational and psychological perspectives. It is a critical and specialized source that describes recent advances in conceptualization and epistemological studies across diverse cultures.

Abstract

1st edition: Winner of the 2004 IAA Life Sciences Book Award! This 2nd Edition represents a complete revision with about 23% more pages and new material compared to the first edition; it includes several recent studies involving astronauts and cosmonauts; and discusses the new field of space tourism. It deals with psychological, psychiatric, and psychosocial issues that affect people who live and work in space. Unlike other books that focus on anecdotal reports and ground-based simulation studies, this book emphasizes the findings from psychological research conducted during actual space missions. Both authors have been active in such research. What is presented in this readable text has previously been found only in scientific journal articles. Topics that are discussed include: behavioral adaptation to space; human performance and cognitive effects; crewmember interactions; psychiatric responses; psychological countermeasures related to habitability factors, work-design, selection, training, and in-flight monitoring and support; and the impact of expeditionary missions to Mars and beyond. People finding this book of interest will include psychology and social science students and professors in universities, medical students and residents in psychiatry and aerospace medicine, human factors workers in space and aviation professions, individuals involved with isolated environments on Earth (e.g., the Antarctic, submarines), aerospace workers in businesses and space agencies such as NASA and ESA, and anyone who is interested in learning the facts about the human side of long-duration space missions. 1st edition reviews: ‘Drs. Kanas and Manzey have produced a comprehensive review of the issues and research in the areas of space psychology and psychiatry. This includes a long overdue up-to-date compilation of findings from research performed in space as well as anecdotal reports. The authors' personal involvement and experience in space research and operations shows throughout the book in its presentation and research of the issues as well as in the insights offered. Highly informative, well organized and written at a level appropriate for a broad range of readers, this book will be a reference source for space professionals, researchers, students, and interested laymen alike. ‘ Leena Tomi, Deputy Director, Operational Space Medicine, Canadian Space Agency Jean-Marc Comtois, B.Eng., M.D. Director, Operational Space Medicine, Canadian Space Agency 'An excellent book by two outstanding experts. The refreshing mix between review and original research results spiced with personal experiences makes it interesting for every reader.' Oliver Angerer, M.D., Human Exploration Science Coordinator, European Space Agency "This book is not just a record of what can go wrong with regard to mental health and performance, but explores a number of prudent psychological, ergonomic, and design engineering countermeasures to help guide future mission planners and spacecraft engineers[…]Written in a clear and engaging style, this book will not only interest the general space enthusiast, but all human factors specialists and anyone else studying the human reaction to extreme and unusual environments. As a comprehensive account of what we have learned so far about the psychological challenges of space travel, Space Psychology and Psychiatry should also be on the bookshelf of any researcher plotting the future course of human spaceflight." Abstract

This book offers something that few other textbooks do: an accessible and understandable approach to discern the implications of complicated research. It will be a useful resource in courses on team building, multicultural and international issues at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. I was most impressed with the use of research from so many different cultures. Too often we take a Western, or even a U.S., perspective and assume that our way is the best way without understanding the cultural contexts. This material certainly avoids that trap. Roger Ritvo, Ph.D., Distinguished Research Professor of Management, Auburn University Montgomery, Montgomery, Alabama, USA Using a fascinating journey of real life stories, a solid theoretical overview, and practical tools, Halverson and Tirmizi take us deep into the setup of different cultures, how they function, sources of potential collisions, and how best to benefit from this wonderful diversity that today's globalization provides. In today's growing globalization, this unprecedented comprehensive book is a must have for all individuals, teams, and organizations that seek to capitalize on the rich diversity of culturally diverse teams. Nader Tadros, Founder and Director, People’s Advocacy, Fairfax, Virginia, USA, Formerly Middle East Director, America's Development Foundation, Cairo, Egypt Effective Multicultural Teams: Theory and Practice is a profound, powerful and fascinating text for graduate students who want to have a better understanding of the basics of multicultural teams. This book is the result of several years of teaching, consulting and researching by the authors on various relevant issues of multicultural teams. The breadth and depth of coverage of this book are extraordinary and its educational importance cannot be over estimated. It offers a comprehensive approach for creating an effective bridge between theory and practice. In today’s globalized market economy, both profit and non-profit sectors are emphasizing performance improvement at all levels of their activities and this cannot be achieved without maximizing the benefits of cultural diversity. On many aspects this publication goes beyond the simple quick fixes of high performing multicultural teams by adding life experiences which are inspirational and practical. Md. Golam Samdani Fakir, Ph.D, Visiting Professor, School for International Training, Brattleboro, Vermont, USA, Director, BRAC Training Division and, Adjunct Faculty at BRAC University, Bangladesh.
