Abstract

The book is concerned with understanding the fundamental mechanisms of high temperature alloy oxidation. It uses this understanding to develop methods of predicting oxidation rates and the way they change with temperature, gas chemistry and alloy composition. The focus is on designing (or selecting) alloy compositions which provide optimal resistance to attack by corrosive gases. . Emphasises quantitative calculations for predicting reaction rates and the effects of temperature, oxidant activities and alloy compositions. . Uses phase diagrams and diffusion paths to analyse and interpret scale structures and internal precipitation distributions . Provides a detailed examination of corrosion in industrial gases (water vapour effects, carburisation and metal dusting, sulphidation) . Text is well supported by numerous micrographs, phase diagrams and tabulations of relevant thermodynamic and kinetic data . Combines physical chemistry and materials science methodologies. High Temperature Oxidation and Corrosion of Metals, Second Edition, provides a high level understanding of the fundamental mechanisms of high temperature alloy oxidation. It uses this understanding to develop methods of predicting oxidation rates and the way they change with temperature, gas chemistry, and alloy composition. The book focuses on the design and selection of alloy compositions which provide optimal resistance to attack by corrosive gases, providing a rigorous treatment of the thermodynamics and kinetics underlying high temperature alloy corrosion. In addition, it emphasizes quantitative calculations for predicting reaction rates and the effects of temperature, oxidant activities, and alloy compositions. Users will find this book to be an indispensable source of information for researchers and students who are dealing with high temperature corrosion.

Abstract

Intermetallic science is closely related to physics, chemistry, metallurgy, materials science & technology, and engineering. This book emphasizes the chemical aspects of this science, and therefore the mutual reactivity of metals and the characteristics of intermetallic compounds. Topics included are: . Phase diagrams of alloy systems. Many intermetallic systems form several compounds, generally not obeying common simple stoichiometric rules, which are often homogeneous in a certain range of compositions. The stability and extension of these phases are conveniently presented through phase diagrams. . Selected aspects of intermetallics structural chemistry, with emphasis on the solid state. The general structural characteristics of intermetallic phases are considered, with attention to nomenclature and to alternative and complementary methods of presenting crystal-chemical data. A brief account is given of derivative and degenerate structures, modular aspects of crystal structures, and of a few special groups of alloys such as quasicrystals and amorphous alloys. A number of selected structural prototypes with typical features, their possible grouping in structural "families" and their distribution among different types of alloys are provided. . Intermetallic reactivity trends in the Periodic Table. Attention is given to a few selected elemental parameters such as electron configuration and valence electron number and to their changes along the Table, which act as reference factors of the intermetallic behaviour. As an example, the relationships are considered between crystal structure and the number of valence electrons per atom (or per formula) in various classes of compounds or solid solution phases. . Alloying behaviour systematics of intermetallic systems with a description of the intermetallic reactivity of each element, or group of elements, in the order of their position in the Periodic Table. For each pair of metallic elements, their capability to form intermediate phases is summarised by maps and schemes. . A description of small scale preparation methods of intermetallics. A number of interesting and significant peculiarities are, e.g., those related to their high melting points, insolubility in common solvents, etc. Systematic treatment of alloying behaviour Wide overview of intermetallic chemistry Illustrated, with many examples.

Abstract

Fe-Ni-Ti ternary alloys are highly desired for several technological applications as they feature interesting material properties. Each of the constituent atomic species forms the basis of a wide range of applications, such as steels, Ni-based superalloys and high-strength, low-weight Ti alloys. These alloys, however, can contain more than ten elements. The ternary Fe-Ni-Ti subsystem can already form a basis of further modeling. More specific applications for the ternary Fe-Ni-Ti system are shape memory alloys and hydrogen storage materials. In the context of the European COST 535 action (THALU-THermodynamics of ALUminides) the ternary Fe-Ni-Ti is assessed and modeled following the CALPHAD approach. This study involves two main parts. Firstly, appropriate thermodynamic models are selected for the Fe-Ni-Ti (either stable or metastable) phases. The structural energy relations between ordered and disordered forms of certain phases (e.g. A1, L1_0 and L1_2, etc.) are considered. Furthermore, the required consistency with the models used for the assessment of the quaternary system Al-Fe-Ni-Ti and its ternary subsystems is taken into account. Sublattice models are chosen for all intermetallic phases while disordered phases and the liquid phase are described using the regular solution model. The order-disorder relation between ordered configurations of bcc and fcc phases and their disordered counterparts are taken into account within the sublattice formalism. Special attention is payed to the four sublattice modeling of the bcc phases, where the Gibbs energy for the disordered bcc phase is written as a function of the formation energies of the compounds. In a second part of this thesis a complete and up to date thermodynamic description of the system is produced. This was accomplished using the selected models, critically reviewed literature data and new experiments performed within the European COST 535 action THALU.
