International concern in scienti? c, industrial, and governmental commu- ties over traces of xenobiotics in foods and in both abiotic and biotic en- ronments has justi? ed the present triumvirate of specialized publications in this ? eld: comprehensive reviews, rapidly published research papers and progress reports, and archival documentations. These three international publications are integrated and scheduled to provide the coherency ess- tial for nonduplicative and current progress in a ? eld as dynamic and complex as environmental contamination and toxicology. This series is reserved exclusively for the diversi? ed literature on “toxic” chemicals in our food, our feeds, our homes, recreational and working surroundings, our domestic animals, our wildlife and ourselves. Tremendous efforts worldwide have been mobilized to evaluate the nature, presence, magnitude, fate, and toxicology of the chemicals loosed upon the earth. Among the sequelae of this broad new emphasis is an undeniable need for an articulated set of authoritative publications, where one can ? nd the latest important world literature produced by these emerging areas of science together with do- mentation of pertinent ancillary legislation. Research directors and legislative or administrative advisers do not have the time to scan the escalating number of technical publications that may contain articles important to current responsibility. Rather, these indiv- uals need the background provided by detailed reviews and the assurance that the latest information is made available to them, all with minimal literature searching.

Chemical industries have to face the big challenge of finding adequate processes to produce large quantities of new products for which there is a present need, decreasing at the same time both the impact on the environment and the risk of disasters. These issues have led to the establishment of new concepts of sustainable development as affirmed in the Rio Declaration on Environment and Development in the early 90’s and has been the subject of intensive studies in the last two decades. The book addresses this challenge collecting the recent “New Methodologies and Techniques for a Sustainable Organic Chemistry”. It provides a wealth of information in the fields of - New efficient and selective catalytic processes - Use of non-usual media or environmentally benign reagents - New selective and efficient synthetic methods - New techniques based on alternative energy sources. All these topics are covered in 15 chapters written by world-renowned experts in these fields who were the lecturers of the NATO ASI NeMeTOC (2005, Siena). Since some of the authors have an industrial background, the book helps to answer virtually any questions which may arise during the development of a new environmentally benign organic process.

""Doubt is our product,"" a cigarette executive once observed, ""since it is the best means of competing with the 'body of fact' that exists in the minds of the general public. It is also the means of establishing a controversy."" In this eye-opening expose, David Michaels reveals how the tobacco industry's duplicitous tactics spawned a multimillion dollar industry that is dismantling public health safeguards. Product defense consultants, he argues, have increasingly skewed the scientific literature, manufactured and magnified scientific uncertainty, and influenced policy decisions to the adva

Groundwater is of utmost importance in the arid and semi-arid environment. The areas in such regions are forced to face a variety of problems regarding groundwater as it is the main source of water no matter for any use viz., drinking, domestic, irrigation or industrial particularly for the rural population. The main challenges in hard rock areas in the semi-arid region are the water conservation, management and planning of the water resources. This is further complicated with several complexities of the geological formation. With the semi-arid environment, complex geological settings and over shooting stresses, the aquifer system becomes extremely fragile and sensitive. In spite of a good amount of research in this field, it is still needed to understand the behaviour of such complex system precisely and also apply the result in reasonably larger scales. Therefore, the present research is focused on improving the knowledge on the structure and functioning of the aquifer system in hard rock terrain.

The book contains the contributions at the NATO Advanced Research Workshop on Soil Chemical Pollution, Risk Assessment, Remediation and Security, which took place in Sofia, Bulgaria, May 23–26, 2007. Scientists representing fields of chemistry, biology, toxicology, physics, risk assessment, ecology, environmental protection, remediation and public health, from Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Belgium, Bulgaria, Germany, France, Hungary, Italy, Kazakhstan, Moldova, Netherlands, Poland, Romania, Russian Federation, Spain and Ukraine participated in the work of the ARW. The main objective of the ARW was to contribute to the existing knowledge on soil pollution and remediation. Stress was given to: critical assessment of the used analyses and methods for study effects in combined chemical pollution (organic pollutants and pesticides, metals) on soil biota and fertility; to evaluate specific aspects of the risk assessment; to assess the most advanced technologies for soil remediation used for different purposes; to evaluated the economical involvement; to evaluate national policies for soil security in different NATO and partner countries.

The international advanced research workshop funded by NATO and entitled “impact of pollutions on animal and animal products” was organized at Almaty (Kazakhstan) on 27–30 September 2007. Thirty-one scientists from 12 countries (Kazakhstan, Kirgizstan, Azerbaijan, Ukraine, Russia, France, Great Britain, Italy, Belgium, Romania and Morocco) presented conferences at this meeting to share their experience and results. The programme included three main aspects: (i) generality on the pollution situation in Central Asia and former Soviet Union republics, (ii) the pollution area and pollution origin in Central Asia and Western countries in relation with animal health, and (iii) the relationships between soil contamination, plant contamination and animal products status. The present workshop contributed highly to the exchange between scientists giving the opportunity for researchers from Central Asia to access to new scientific approaches and methodologies, and for European scientists to assess the extent of the environmental problems in this part of the world. No doubt that these exchanges were the main success of the workshop marked by very stimulating discussions. Such meeting was also the opportunity to put on the first stone of a scientific network focused on the subject of the workshop. The importance of pollution in Central Asia in general and in Kazakhstan in p- ticular is a well-known feature and several references are available on the source and localization of pollution problems in those countries. The references are also abundant on the impact of the environmental failures on human health.

Design for Environmental Sustainability is a technical and operative contribution to the United Nations "Decade on Education for Sustainable Development" (2005-2014), aiding the development of a new generation of designers, responsible and able in the task of designing environmentally sustainable products. Design for Environmental Sustainability provides a comprehensive framework and a practical tool to support the design process. The book offers an organic vision of methodologies, tools and strategies for the integration of environmental requirements into product development. Possible strategies and design guidelines are highlighted, accompanied by a large selection of high-quality environmentally-aware product design case studies. Divided into four parts, the first part covers environmental sustainability and presents the general guidelines that can be followed to reach it. The second part examines the Life Cycle Design approach and the strategies to minimise consumption of resources, select low environmental impact resources, optimise product life span, extend the life of materials, and design for disassembly. The third part presents methods and tools to evaluate the environmental impact of products (e.g., Life Cycle Assessment) and other support tools for the integration of environmental requirements into real design processes. The fourth and final part describes the historical evolution of sustainability, both in design practice and research. Design for Environmental Sustainability is an important text for all students, designers and design engineers interested in product development processes.
