Abstract

The International Workshop on "Autonomous Systems - Self-Organization, Management, and Control " is the eighth in a successful series of workshops that were established by Shanghai Jiao Tong University and Technische Universitat Berlin. The goal of these workshops is to bring together researchers from both universities in order to present research results to an international community. In recent years autonomy of action has become a broadly desirable property of systems which operate in complex technical, societal and natural environments. Moving or flying robots, for example, need to act on sensor data in real time, semantic services need to adapt to changing requirements of their users, and information systems which are based on huge information sources, like the World Wide Web, need to select information in view of their user's opinions and interests. To develop such systems and applications advanced techniques, algorithms, languages, methodologies, and architectures are required, which allow for self-organization, selfmanagement, and self-control. Reporting on recent developments in autonomous systems and on studies of their specification and analysis, this workshop addresses the following topics: Techniques of Sensing and Recognition Applications of Autonomous Behavior Self-Reference and Formal Analysis Architecting and Management Opinion Mining and User Interest.

Abstract

This book aims to provide a comprehensive review of the contribution of network analysis to the understanding of tourism destinations and organizations. Theoretical and methodological aspects are discussed along with a series of applications. While this is a relatively new approach in the tourism literature, in other social and natural sciences network analysis has a long tradition and has provided important insights for the knowledge of the structure and the dynamics of many complex systems. The study of network structures, both from a quantitative and qualitative point of view, can deliver a number of useful outcomes also for the analysis of tourism destinations and organizations.

Abstract

Many elements of our society are embedded in network structures in which actors depend on each other as well as the structural context of their actions. This is reflected by the wide use of concepts and terms of social network analysis, such as the concept of the small world, the strength of weak ties, opinion leaders, gatekeepers, viral marketing, terrorist networks, stakeholders and the like. This volume provides a sample of the broad range of research in which social network analysis can be fruitfully applied. Topics addressed include networks of academic hiring, epidemic dynamics of diseases in populations such as HIV/AIDS, flow of information, semantic networks of the internet, relationships in private and public spheres, patent authorship, paper citation, and networks in linguistic as well as political systems.

Abstract

The availability of large data sets has allowed researchers to uncover complex properties such as large-scale fluctuations and heterogeneities in many networks, leading to the breakdown of standard theoretical frameworks and models. Until recently these systems were considered as haphazard sets of points and connections. Recent advances have generated a vigorous research effort in understanding the effect of complex connectivity patterns on dynamical phenomena. This book presents a comprehensive account of these effects. A vast number of systems, from the brain to ecosystems, power grids and the Internet, can be represented as large complex networks. This book will interest graduate students and researchers in many disciplines, from physics and statistical mechanics to mathematical biology and information science. Its modular approach allows readers to readily access the sections of most interest to them, and complicated maths is avoided so the text can be easily followed by non-experts in the subject.

Abstract

The construction of mathematical models is an essential scientific activity. Mathematics has long been associated with developments in the exact sciences and engineering, but more recently mathematical modelling has been used to investigate complex systems that arise in many other fields. The contributors to this book demonstrate the application of mathematics to modern research topics in ecology and environmental science, health and medicine, phylogenetics and neural networks, theoretical chemistry, economics and management. The reader will find some review papers outlining current research directions in hot topics such as pattern formation and applications to medicine, and more targeted research papers on current developments in the various disciplines included. Both should provide insight and inspiration for further work on these subjects. The extensive relevant literature cited in some of the survey expository articles is another feature.

Abstract

In any software design project, the analysis stage - documenting and designing technical requirements for the needs of users - is vital to the success of the project. This third edition of the successful Analysis and Design of Information Systems provides a comprehensive introduction and user-friendly survey to all aspects of business transformation and analysis, and aims to provide the complex set of tools covering all types of systems, including legacy, transactional, database, and web/e-commerce topics. Focusing on the applied aspects of analysis to create systems that meet the needs of their users, (consumers and businesses), this revised text aims to enhance the set of techniques and tools that the analyst/designer requires for success and to organizations to implement business transformation of operations. Topics and features: • Additional chapters on Web interface tools, security and change control, and data warehouse system design • Developments on new designs and technologies, particularly in the area of web analysis and design; a revised Web/Commerce chapter addresses component middleware for complex systems design • New case studies and more examples, providing readers with a deeper understanding of practicalities • Presents modelling tools within a SDLC framework, thereby providing readers with a step-by-step understanding of when and how to use them • More coverage on converting logical models to physical models, how to generate DDL, and testing database functionalities • Expanded scope of analysis and design to include more specific conventions, such as logical to physical design steps, XML, data values, and denormalization Based on feedback the author received from instructors and practitioners in industry, this enhanced text/reference presents a set of good practices that allow readers to adjust to the constraints and needs of any business. It is a valuable resource and guide for all information systems students, as well as practitioners and professionals who need an in-depth understanding of the principles of the analysis and design process. Dr. Arthur M. Langer is the senior director of the Center for Technology, Innovation, and Community Engagement at Columbia University’s Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Science.
