In this new collection of essay, many published here for the first time, the author leads a series of further explorations into the world of books, libraries, and the visual arts. Wendorf shows how the critical arguments posed by Benjamin, Baudrillard, Muensterberger and others play out in modern literary and fictional texts that take collecting as their focus : John Fowles' The collector, SusanSontag's The volcano lover, Evan Connell's The connoisseur, Tibor Fischer's The collector collector, Bruce Chatwin's Utz, and Ian McEwan's early short story "Solid geometry". Two chapters are devoted to library history : a bicentennial essay on the Boston Athenaeum, and an investigation of the origins of America's membership libraries in England and its colonies in the eighteenth century. Four essays provide fresh asessments of Joshua Reynolds's career and his relationships within the "blue-stocking" world of Elizabeth Montagu, Hester Thrale Piozzi, and his sister Frances Reynolds.

Loin de diminuer l’attraction pour l’inconnu, l’intérieur et le secret, l’ouverture des vantaux du cabinet peint en trompe-l’oeil introduit le spectateur dans l’exploration minutieuse des objets assemblés. D’emblée la curiosité est à l’oeuvre et produit sur le spectateur d’aujourd’hui comme sur celui d’hier le désir d’approfondir son regard, de mieux connaître les objets, de comprendre leurs liens. Rendue nécessaire par la séparation des champs du savoir qui a contribué à l’élaboration de la science moderne, la pluridisciplinarité de ce volume a pour but de rechercher une stimulante communauté d’esprit entre des spécialistes de divers domaines : la littérature, l’histoire de l’art, l’histoire des sciences et techniques. Ces travaux s’inscrivent dans une longue et dense série d’études sur la curiosité et les cabinets de curiosités dans l’Europe moderne. Pour diverses qu’elles soient, les accumulations d’objets dans les cabinets de curiosités ne sont pas fortuites : elles ont pour projet la mise en forme, sinon la mise en scène du savoir, propre à le faire exister pour lui-même et pour autrui. Au sein du monde de la curiosité, ce volume explore plusieurs types de lieux textuels ou physiques et les relations qu’ils entretiennent dans l’apparition et la construction du phénomène propre de la curiosité.
