Now that the Energy Certificate for Buildings has been introduced throughout the European Union, we can expect to see a sharp rise in the number of building renovations. This volume is a practical guide with concrete recommendations for realizing energy-related renovation measures - it accompanies the planner from design to execution. All energy-related issues are treated according to their goals. Large-scale detail drawings document constructive solutions for removing structural weaknesses. An overview of installation engineering measures helps to evaluate possibilities, costs, and economic viability. The book uses realized projects to demonstrate that sustainable improvements cannot be achieved by energy-specific measures alone - it is also important to consider the building as a whole. All of the examples are documented with a state analysis as well as a depiction and assessment of the measures taken.

Stephen Bann explores the 'origins' of modernism; he questions the conflation of modernism with twentieth century art. This book examines the arguments for the centrality of French modernist painting. Bann focuses particularly on the notion of the modernist break, as it has been interpreted with regard to painters like Manet and Ingres. He also argues that 'curiosity' - with its origins in the seventeenth-century world-view - can be a valid concept for understanding some aspects of contemporary art that contest the modern. The term 'curiosity' has often been used to describe practices of collecting and creating objects that are set apart from the hegemonic order of high or academic art. In the nineteenth century 'curiosity' became identified with a new aesthetic close to, if not identical with, that of the 'modern'. Curiosity has resurfaced as a widespread and noteworthy feature of present-day art, connected not only to the creation of objects but also to a discernible shift in museological practice. The artists selected for discussion will include in particular Hubert Duprat, from France, and Gerhard Lang, from Germany. Their orientation with regard to curiosity brings to the surface the broader question of the shared heritage of art and science.

Is aggressive monetary policy response to inflation feasible in countries that suffer from fiscal dominance? We find that if nominal interest rates are allowed to respond to government debt, even aggressive rules that satisfy the Taylor principle can produce unique equilibria. However, resulting inflation is extremely volatile and zero lower bound on nominal interest rates is frequently violated. Within the set of feasible rules the optimal response to inflation is highly negative, and more aggressive inflation fighting is inferior from a welfare point of view. The welfare gain from responding to fiscal variables is minimal compared to the gain from eliminating fiscal dominance.

Resolution of singularities is a powerful and frequently used tool in algebraic geometry. In this book, János Kollár provides a comprehensive treatment of the characteristic 0 case. He describes more than a dozen proofs for curves, many based on the original papers of Newton, Riemann, and Noether. Kollár goes back to the original sources and presents them in a modern context. He addresses three methods for surfaces, and gives a self-contained and entirely elementary proof of a strong and functorial resolution in all dimensions. Based on a series of lectures at Princeton University and written in an informal yet lucid style, this book is aimed at readers who are interested in both the historical roots of the modern methods and in a simple and transparent proof of this important theorem.
