This practical new book provides much-needed, practical, hands-on experience capturing analysis and design in UML. It holds the hands of engineers making the difficult leap from developing in C to the higher-level and more robust Unified Modeling Language, thereby supporting professional development for engineers looking to broaden their skill-sets in order to become more saleable in the job market. It provides a laboratory environment through a series of progressively more complex exercises that act as building blocks, illustrating the various aspects of UML and its application to re

Over recent years, embedded systems have gained an enormous amount of processing power and functionality. Many of the formerly external components can now be integrated into a single System-on-Chip. This tendency has resulted in a dramatic reduction in the size and cost of embedded systems. As a unique technology, the design of embedded systems is an essential element of many innovations. Embedded System Design: Topics, Techniques and Trends presents the technical program of the International Embedded Systems Symposium (IESS) 2007 held in Irvine, California. IESS is a unique forum to present novel ideas, exchange timely research results, and discuss the state of the art and future trends in the field of embedded systems. Contributors and participants from both industry and academia take active part in this symposium. The IESS conference is organized by the Computer Systems Technology committee (TC10) of the International Federation for Information Processing (IFIP). Timley topics, techniques and trends in embedded system design are covered by the chapters in this book, including design methodology, specification and modeling, embedded software and hardware synthesis, networks-on-chip, distributed and networked systems, and system verification and validation. Particular emphaisis is paid to automotive and medical applications. A set of actual case studies and special aspects in embedded system design are included as well.

Real-Time Applications with Stochastic Task Execution Times presents three approaches to the analysis of the deadline miss ratio of applications with stochastic task execution times. Each of the three approaches fits best to a different context. The first approach is an exact one and is efficiently applicable to monoprocessor systems. The second approach is an approximate one, which allows for designer-controlled trade-off between analysis accuracy and analysis speed. It is efficiently applicable to multiprocessor systems. The third approach is less accurate but sufficiently fast in order to be placed inside optimisation loops. Based on the last approach, we propose a heuristic for task mapping and priority assignment for deadline miss ratio minimisation.

CHES2007,theninthworkshoponCryptographicHardwareandEmbeddedS- tems, was sponsored by the International Association for Cryptologic Research (IACR) and held in Vienna, Austria, September 10–13, 2007. The workshop - ceived 99 submissions from 24 countries, of which the Program Committee (39 members from 15 countries) selected 31 for presentation. For the ?rst time in the history of CHES, each submission was reviewed by at least four reviewers instead of three (and at least ?ve for submissions by PC members, those now being limited to two per member) and many submitted papers have received plenty of extra reviews (some papers received up to nine reviews), thus totalling the unprecedented record of 483 reviews overall. Thepaperscollectedinthisvolumerepresentcutting-edgeworldwideresearch in the rapidly evolving ?elds of crypto-hardware, fault-based and side-channel cryptanalysis, and embedded cryptography, at the crossing of academic and - dustrial research. The wide diversity of subjects appearing in these proceedings covers virtually all related areas and shows our e?orts to extend the scope of CHES more than usual. Although a relatively young workshop, CHES is now ?rmlyestablishedasascienti?ceventofreferenceappreciatedbymoreandmore renowned experts of theory and practice: many high-quality works were subm- ted, all of which, sadly, could not be accepted. Selecting from so many good worksis no easy task and our deepest thanks go to the members of the Program Committee for their involvement, excellence, and team spirit. We are grateful to the numerous external reviewers listed below for their expertise and assistance in our deliberations.

It has been widely recognized that embedded and ubiquitous computing will have tremendous impacts on many aspects of our daily life. Innovation and close collaboration between academia and industry are the keys to guaranteeing success in the development and deployment of the technology in embedded and ubiquitous computing. TheIFIP InternationalConferenceonEmbeddedandUbiquitous Computing (EUC) provides a forum for engineers and scientists in academia, industry, and governmentto address challenges and to present and discuss their ideas, results, work in progress and experience. The Technical Program Committee (TPC) of EUC 2007 was lead by the TPC Chair, Tei-Wei Kuo, and TPC Vice Chairs. A strong international TPC was formed to review and evaluate the submissions. Each paper was reviewed carefully by at least three TPC members or external reviewers. It was extremely di?cult for the TPC to select the presentations because there were so many excellent and interesting submissions. There were 217 submissions from all over the world, and only 65 papers are published in this proceedings volume.
