Cet ouvrage est une première initiation à la sémiotique générale, au jeu de la signification et de la communication, quel que soit le type de langage (auditif, visuel, olfactif, gustatif, tactile) analysé. Car l'un des buts de la sémiotique est au moins de montrer la cohérence interne d'un discours, d'un tableau, d'un comportement gestuel, d'un repas, d'une publicité, d'une BD, bref de toute pratique culturelle donnée, en mettant à jour les règles de fonctionnement sous-jacentes qui rendent compte de leur sens.
