L'architecte Filippo Brunelleschi invente la perspective centrale à Florence vers 1415. Peu après, les peintres et théoriciens s'en emparent et font jouer ses merveilleux effets. Au XVIIe siècle, elle est à l'origine d'une théorie mathématique révolutionnaire, la géométrie projective. De nos jours, les techniques inspirées de la perspective sont à l'œuvre dans des domaines allant de la photographie à la reconnaissance des formes, en passant par les mathématiques, l'esthétique et l'optique.
