Dealing with Uncertainties proposes and explains a new approach for the analysis of uncertainties. Firstly, it is shown that uncertainties are the consequence of modern science rather than of measurements. Secondly, it stresses the importance of the deductive approach to uncertainties. This perspective has the potential of dealing with the uncertainty of a single data point and of data of a set having differing weights. Both cases cannot be dealt with the inductive approach, which is usually taken. This innovative monograph also fully covers both uncorrelated and correlated uncertainties. The weakness of using statistical weights in regression analysis is discussed. Abundant examples are given for correlation in and between data sets and for the feedback of uncertainties on experiment design.

Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) can be exploited not only for nanomaterials characterization but also integrated with new technologies for in-situ nanomaterials engineering and manipulation. Scanning Microscopy for Nanotechnology addresses the rapid development of these techniques for nanotechnology, in both technique and application chapters by leading practitioners. The book covers topics including nanomaterials imaging, X-ray microanalysis, high-resolution SEM, low kV SEM, cryo-SEM, as well as new techniques such as electron back scatter diffraction (EBSD) and scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM). Fabrication techniques integrated with SEM, such as e-beam nanolithography, nanomanipulation, and focused ion beam nanofabrication, are major new dimensions for SEM application. Application areas include the study of nanoparticles, nanowires and nanotubes, three-dimensional nanostructures, quantum dots, magnetic nanomaterials, photonic structures, and bio-inspired nanomaterials. This book will appeal not only to a broad spectrum of nanomaterials researchers, but also to SEM development specialists.

The treatment of time in quantum mechanics is still an important and challenging open question in the foundation of the quantum theory. This book describes the problems, and the attempts and achievements in defining, formalizing and measuring different time quantities in quantum theory, such as the parametric (clock) time, tunneling times, decay times, dwell times, delay times, arrival times or jump times. This multi-authored book, written as an introductory guide for newcomers to the subject, as well as a useful source of information for the expert, covers many of the open questions. After the brief historical overview in the introduction, 12 contributions are devoted to conceptual and theoretical investigations as well as experimental issues in quantum-mechanical time measurements. This novel monograph should attract physicists as well as philosophers of science working in the foundations of quantum physics. For this revised second edition, all chapters have been updated and extended where appropriate. From the reviews of the first edition: "Beginning with a clear introduction to the perplexing issue of the nature of time in quantum mechanics, the reader then undertakes a stimulating excursion through a sequence of chapters written by leading researchers. Theory and experiment are nicely balanced, and extensive lists of references accompany each chapter. […] Furthermore, the book is enlightening from a sociological perspective to see how 'sides' of these controversies developed and later reconciled as unified approaches […]." The Physicist, 39/5 (2002).

Van Laar and Akça’s popular text book, Forest Mensuration, was first published in 1997. Like that first edition, this modern update is based on extensive research, teaching and practical experience in both Europe, and the tropics and subtropics. However, it has also been extensively revised, and now includes chapters on remote sensing and the application of aerial photographs and satellite imagery. As with its predecessor, this book assumes no advanced knowledge of statistical methods, and combines practical techniques with important historical and disciplinary context. The result is a strong balance between a handbook on traditional mensuration methods, and a valuable reference on the many recent research and inventory-related innovations which have emerged in recent years. Written in a highly accessible style, the book is aimed primarily at undergraduate students and forest practitioners – and now includes a wide range of worked examples which will provide guidance for readers wishing to process their own data. However, with its wide scope, and including many new instruments for forest measurement, the book will also act as an extremely useful reference material for postgraduate students and forest scientists.

Multiphase thermal systems (involving more than one phase or one component) have numerous applications in aerospace, heat-exchanger, transport of contaminants in environmental systems, and energy transport and energy conversion systems. Advances in understanding the behaviour of multiphase thermal systems could lead to higher efficiency energy production systems, improved heat-exchanger design, and safer and enhanced treatment of hazardous waste. But such advances have been greatly hindered by the strong effect of gravitational acceleration on the flow. Depending on the flow orientation and the phase velocities, gravitational forces could significantly alter the flow regime, and hence the pressure-drop and heat-transfer coefficients associated with the flow. A reduced gravity environment (or "microgravity"), provides an excellent tool to study the flow without the masking effects of gravity. This book presents for the first time a comprehensive coverage of all aspects of two-phase flow behaviour in the virtual absence of gravity.

Physical processes, involving atomic phenomena, allow more and more precise time and frequency measurements. This progress is not possible without convenient processing of the respective raw data. The book describes the data processing at various levels: design of the time and frequency references, characterization of the time and frequency references, applications involving precise time and/or frequency references. The metrological properties stability, accuracy and reproducibility are defined and the processes leading to their characterization are shown. The various aspects of the variance of the frequency fluctuations are discussed and compared and their significance is given. Some major applications of the best frequency and time standards are finally discussed. The way the extreme precision of these sources is used to obtain precise time and position information is shown: - Time scales, used to describe every human and physical activities, such as astronomy, physical laws, etc. - Positioning systems, such as GPS - Very long base interferometry (VLBI).

The NATO Advanced Research Workshop on “Optics of Biological Particles” met in Novosibirsk, Russia 3 – 6 October, 2005. The focus of the meeting was the potential of light scattering in the detection and characterization of biological particles, on novel detection systems using polarized light scattering, imaging (microscopy), inelastic scattering, absorption, and emission over all EM spectral regions. The concept for the ARW came about at the culmination of a NATO Science for Peace Project, headed by Alfons and Valeri. It was thought this would be a convenient vehicle to advertise and demonstrate the apparatus resulting from this multi-year collaboration. Potential applications of the device for bio-aerosol Valeri Maltsev and Alfons Hoekstra. characterization interested the third member of the triumvirate. While the co-chairs were occupied by bureaucratic necessities, the logistics were worked out by the Local Organizing Committee, the seemingly endless number of students and colleagues of Valeri, and especially the fixer Dina Goloshchapova who dealt with all the difficult problems. Well logging lies at the intersection of applied geophysics, petroleum and geotechnical engineering. It has its roots in the tentative electrical measurements in well bores which were made by the Schlumberger brothers some 80 years ago in the earliest days of systematic petroleum exploration. Today, a variety of specialized instruments is used to obtain measurements from the borehole during, as well as after, the drilling process. This readable and authoritative treatment of the physics of these measurements dispels the "black magic" of well log interpretation by relating them, including those obtained by the latest generation of tools, to rock physics. It offers a thorough exposé of the physical basis of borehole geophysical measurements, as well as an introduction to practical petrophysics -- extracting desired properties from well log measurements. "Well Logging for Earth Scientists", 2 nd edition, is thoroughly revised and extended with three new chapters, many new illustrations and expanded and updated references in each chapter. Audience: This graduate level textbook with many exercises can also serve as a useful handbook for practicing earth scientists (geophysicists, geologists, or petroleum engineers).
