Abstract

"Emerging Technologies for Knowledge Resource Management examines various factors that contribute to an enabled environment for optimum utilisation of information resources. These include the digital form of information resources, which are inherently sharable, consortia as a concept to bring people and materials together and unified portals as technology to bring together disparate and heterogeneous resources for sharing and access. The book provides a step-by-step guideline for system analysis and requirements analysis. The book also provides reviews of existing portal models for sharing resources and identifies the gap in meeting the objectives. The book provides a framework for a cost effective unified portal model to share the electronic information resources available in the participating libraries in a distributed digital environment."--Publisher's website

Abstract

Abstract

Cultural history enthusiasts have asserted the urgent need to protect digital information from imminent loss. Without action, much of what has been created in digital form is likely to become unusable. Although a decade has already elapsed since this challenge was clearly articulated, nobody has described a complete procedure for preventing such loss – until now. Leading industry consultant Henry M. Gladney outlines a technical solution and justifies its correctness and optimality. His presentation focuses on long-term digital preservation principles as a basis for producing the software that will be needed. The method described will work for any kind of digital document, multimedia file, business record collection, or scientific information, and is believed to be optimal with respect to both the quality of the preserved information and end-user convenience. Additionally, Dr. Gladney explains the requirements of the related software, and sketches how to implement it. Preserving Digital Information presents an up-to-date description of its field, together with a solution for all technical problems identified in the pertinent professional literature. It is for archivists, research librarians, and museum curators who need to understand digital technology in order to manage their institutions; software engineers and computer scientists whose work requires sound information about digital preservation; and attorneys, medical professionals, government officials, and business executives who depend on the long-term reliability of digital records.

Abstract

The International Conference on Asian Digital Libraries (ICADL) is one of the leading international conferences in digital libraries research. The conference has come a long way since its inception in 1998 as the First Asia Digital Library Workshop held in Hong Kong. Since then, the conference has traveled across the Asian continent and has been hosted by Taiwan (ICADL 1999), Seoul, Korea (ICADL 2000), Bangalore, India (ICADL 2001), Singapore (ICADL 2002), Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia (ICADL 2003), Shanghai, China (ICADL 2004), Bangkok, Thailand (ICADL 2005), and Kyoto, Japan (ICADL 2006). The 2007 edition of the conference marks an important milestone in the ICADL series. Into its tenth year, the conference matured into a significant gathering of practitioners, researchers, educators and policy makers from diverse disciplines sharing a common interest in advancing digital libraries research in Asia. ICADL 2007 was held in Hanoi, Vietnam during December 10–13, 2007, with the theme, “Asian Digital Libraries: Looking Back 10 Years and Forging New Frontiers.” The theme reflects upon the growth of the digital libraries community and explores new areas that the community could delve into in the coming years.

Abstract

We are proud to present the proceedings of the 11th European Conference on Research and Advanced Technology for Digital Libraries (ECDL 2007) which, following Pisa (1997), Heraklion (1998), Paris (1999), Lisbon (2000), Da- stadt (2001), Rome (2002), Trondheim (2003), Bath (2004), Vienna (2005) and Alicante (2006), took place on September 16-21, 2007 in Budapest, Hungary. Over the last 11 years, ECDL has created a strong interdisciplinary com- nity of researchers and practitioners in the ?eld of digital libraries, and has formed a substantial body of scholarly publications contained in the conference proceedings. ECDL 2007 featured separate calls for paper and poster submissions, - sulting in 119 full papers and 34 posters being submitted to the conference. All papers were subject to an in-depth peer-review process; three reviews per submission were produced by a Program Committee of 69 members from 27 countries. In total 36 of 119 full paper submissions were accepted at the P- gram Committee meeting for presentation at the conference and publication in the proceedings with Springer, resulting in an acceptance rate of 30%. Also, 24 poster/demo submissions and another 15 papers from the full paper submissions wereacceptedforposterpresentationandpublicationintheproceedingsvolume.
