Abstract

In recent years, echocardiography has evolved from a qualitative diagnostic tool into a complex and sophisticated technique that is able to provide accurate, quantitative information driving the management of most cardiac diseases. Despite the availability, affordability and scientific value of advanced echocardiography techniques such as Tissue Doppler Imaging (TDI) and Speckle Tracking, there has been a lack of accessible information about their use in real-life medical practice. This practical book is the first comprehensive resource with truly international authorship covering the theory and clinical applications of advanced myocardial imaging as a diagnostic, monitoring and prognostic tool. Clear, concise key facts and summaries throughout the book enable fast decisions at point of care. This book is an invaluable resource for cardiologists, sonographers or other healthcare professionals who want to get the most out of the new technology available on echo machines.

Abstract

Essential Echocardiography: A Practical Handbook serves as today's premier practical guide to the understanding of the most commonly used cardiac imaging technique in the world. The perfect marriage between anatomy and physiology, the text covers emerging cardiac imaging technologies, advances in ultrasound technology, as well as new techniques and applications of cardiac ultrasound. Essential Echocardiography: A Practical Handbook provides the physiological, anatomical, and diagnostic grounding for all students of cardiac ultrasound, as well as a sound basis for a more general understanding of cardiac imaging. This volume will be of great value to cardiologists in training and practice, internists, and cardiac sonographers.

Abstract

Congenital heart disease is a multi-faceted and complex subject due to the immense variability in cardiac morphology. Some of these changes can be expected as part of the natural history of the various diseases and others are directly related to the original surgery correcting the congenital defect, so it has become clear that adult congenital cardiology is a defined entity on its own. Cardiologists and cardiac radiologists therefore must be prepared for a huge variability in the echocardiographic appearances of congenital heart disease both pre and postoperative, and this book provides the tools to evaluate the potential malformed pediatric or adult heart. Echocardiography in Adult Congenital Heart Disease provides the cardiologist with access to the considerable wealth of imaging data from Royal Brompton Hospital and National Heart and Lung Institute in London, UK. Consequently, the book contains numerous echocardiographic images to illustrate the appearances of rare defects and demonstrates areas for using non-invasive imaging to assess cardiac physiology in different disease. This gives readers a practical insight into the techniques needed to establish non-invasive diagnoses of congenital heart diseases.
