Abstract

The Microsoft Windows Presentation Foundation (formerly code-named "Avalon") is a key part of .NET 3.0 and provides the foundation for building applications and high-quality user experiences in Windows Vista. WPF blends together application user interface, documents, and media content, while exploiting the full power of your computer. WPF functionality extends support for Tablet PCs and other forms of input device, and provides a more modern imaging and printing pipeline. It also provides accessibility and user interface automation infrastructure, data-driven user interface and visualization, and even integration points for weaving the application experience into the Windows shell. Pro WPF: Windows Presentation Foundation in .NET 3.0 covers WPF from installation to application design and implementation to deployment. One of the most detailed books on WPF technology, it provides you with the no-nonsense, practical advice you need in order to build high-quality WPF applications quickly and easily. It also digs into the more advance aspects of WPF and how they relate to the other elements of the WinFX stack and the .NET Framework 2.0.

Abstract

Practical .NET 2.0 Networking Projects demonstrates some of the key networking technologies that are being made easily accessible through .NET Framework 2.0. It discusses communication between wired machines and between networks and mobile devices. The book teaches you about the technologies by walking you through sample projects in a straightforward and direct way. The book begins by discussing background theory so you'll get comfortable with the layout of the .NET Framework and Compact Framework from a networking perspective. Then you'll use the APIs within these frameworks to build a variety of cutting-edge networking applications that cover everything from Bluetooth and RFID communication to sockets programming and chat servers. You'll build working examples for each project, which you can also customize and use for your own purposes. The featured projects cover: Basic introduction to network programming in .NET 2.0 Sockets programming Serial communication Bluetooth and GPS Infrared networking to mobile devices RFID.

Abstract

This volume presents papers and speeches given in the Experimental E- nomics Week in Honour of Dr Vernon L. Smith held in Okayama and Kyoto, 13-17 December 2004, which consisted of Dr Smith’s public speech and the International Conference on Experiments in Economic Sciences: New - proaches to Solving Real-world Problems. Despite having a short history, experiments are now considered indispensable in economics as in other ?elds of science and engineering. As Dr Smith’s Nobel Prize (2002) shows, experimental economics has now established itself in modern economics. In such an environment, researchers are expected to developthetraditionwithnewideasinnew?eldsforsolvingvariousproblems in the real world. The Experimental Economics Week, which was organised to explore new ?elds for experiments with new approaches, provided a unique opportunity for those who were engaged or interested in experiments in their ?elds to discuss experimental approaches from various standpoints. Economic experiments broaden and deepen our understanding of human - haviour, the economy and their interdependence. Some experiments are - signed to observe how people behave. Experimenters control subjects’ e- nomic environment to guess their strategies, which are not always apparent in the real world. The environment may be game-theoretic (a person’s gain or loss is a?ected by other persons’ actions) or non-game-theoretic. In either case what is checked is subjects’ behaviour. Some experiments are done to see how market or other economic systems work.

Abstract

The service-oriented approach has become more and more popular, now allowing highly integrated and yet heterogeneous applications. Web services are the natural evolution of conventional middleware technologies to support Web-based and enterprise-level integration. The highly dynamic characteristics of service-oriented applications means their validation is a continuous process that often runs in parallel with execution. It is not possible to clearly distinguish between the predeployment validation of a system and its use, nor is it possible to guarantee that the checks passed at a certain time will be passed at a later time and in the actual execution environment as well. Baresi and Di Nitto have put together the first reference on all aspects of testing and validating service-oriented architectures, taking into account these inherent intricacies. The contributions by leading academic and industrial research groups are structured into four parts on: static analysis to acquire insight into how the system is supposed to work; testing techniques to sample its actual behavior; monitoring to probe its operational performance; and nonfunctional requirements like reliability and trust. This monograph is an initial source of knowledge for researchers in both academia and industry in the field of service-oriented architecture validation and verification approaches. They will find a comprehensive survey of state-of-the-art approaches as well as techniques and tools to improve the quality of service-oriented applications.

Abstract

Reading has arguably the longest and richest history of any domain for scientifically considering the impact of technology on the user. From the 1920s to the 1950s, Miles Tinker [1963] and other researchers ran hundreds of user tests that examined the effects of different fonts and text layout variables, such as the amount of vertical space between each line of text (called leading). Their research focused on user performance, and reading speed was the favoured measure. They charted the effect of the manipulated variables on reading speed, looking for the point at which their participants could read the fastest. Their assumption was that faster reading speeds created a more optimal experience. Printers and publishers eagerly consumed this research. In recent years, some of these variables have been reexamined as the technology and capabilities evolve with the advent of computers and computer screens. Dillon [1992] examined how to design textual information for an electronic environment. Boyarski et al. [1998] examined the effect of fonts that were designed for computer screens. Dyson & Kipping [1998] examined the effect of line length on computer screens. Larson et al. [2000] examined the effect of 3-D rotation on reading. Gugerty et al. [2004] demonstrated a reading performance advantage with the Microsoft ClearType display technology.

Abstract

Reusability of information models has been discussed in science and practice for many years. Reference models are information models that are developed with the aim of being reused for different but similar application scenarios. They primarily promise time and cost savings, since parts of the reference models can be reused. The topic of reference modeling is addressed in this book from different perspectives: Besides reference modeling languages that provide special modeling language concepts for the development and application of reference models, reference modeling methodologies are discussed, which additionally provide procedure models for the construction and application of reference models. Moreover, particular reference models are discussed and evaluated.

Abstract

Open source software (free software) has emerged as a major field of scientific inquiry across a number of disciplines. When the concept of open source began to gain mindshare in the global business community, decision makers faced a challenge: to convert hype and potential into sustainable profit and viable business models. This volume addresses this challenge through presenting some of the newest, extensively peer-reviewed research in the area.
