Psychiatre de liaison et ancien président de la Société Suisse de Médecine et de Soins Palliatifs, l'auteur décrit le parcours du patient gravement malade et mourant. La dégradation du corps, leb souffrances physiques et psychologiques, le diagnostic de phase terminale sonnant comme un verdict et la mort sont des réalités aujourd'hui très présentes dans nos systèmes de santé. Le mouvement des soins palliatifs s'est fait le porte-parole de cette nouvelle mission médicale qui, s'opposant à la médecine curative, a pour objectif la prise en compte des personnes incurables et en fin de vie, refusant également la notion d'une vie " qui ne vaut pas la peine d'être vécue ", considérée comme indigne par les partisans de l'euthanasie.
