Welchen Einfluss hat die Alltagsmediennutzung von Kindern und Jugendlichen auf deren Schulleistungen? Wie wirkt sich insbesondere der Konsum gewalthaltiger Medieninhalte auf Kinder und Jugendliche aus? Besteht ein Zusammenhang zur Jugendgewalt? Gibt es die Gefahr von Computerspielen im Sinne einer Sucht, abhängig zu werden?Am Kriminologischen Forschungsinstitut Niedersachsen (KFN) gibt es zur Beantwortung dieser Fragen ein auf mehrere Jahre angelegtes Forschungsprogramm, das 2005 mit einer in elf westdeutschen Städten und Landkreisen durchgeführten Schülerbefragung begonnen hat. 14.301 Neuntklässler und 5.529 Viertklässler haben Fragen zu ihrer Mediennutzung und ihrer Familie, ihrem schulischen Umfeld und ihrem Freizeitverhalten beantwortet. Ein zentraler Aspekt war dabei, welche Rolle die Medien in diesem Beziehungsgeflecht spielen und mit welchen Entwicklungen besonders intensiver Medienkonsum von Kindern und Jugendlichen einhergeht.Das Buch vermittelt einen Überblick der einschlägigen Medienwirkungsforschung und ordnet die Befragungsergebnisse des KFN in den Kontext der internationalen Forschung ein.
