Proceedings of the 17th Analysis and Computation Specialty Conference 2006, held in conjunction with Structures Congress 2006 in St. Louis, Missouri, May 18-21, 2006. The collection of 44 papers highlights recent research in the broad areas of applied structural analysis, optimal structural design, structural control, and emergent computing technology. Dr. Kircher's presentation addressed the topic of Protecting Older Buildings with Seismic Isolation and Damping Systems. Dr. Kircher has made significant contributions to the field of earthquake engineering including the development of earthquake damage and loss estimation methods, seismic hazard criteria, and isolation and damping system design criteria used in building codes.

Prepared by the Reliability-Based Design Committee of the Structural Engineering Institute of ASCE. Reliability-Based Design of Utility Pole Structures provides state-of the-art technical information on the design of utility pole structures. Among other useful features, this manual demonstrates how poles differing in material can be designed to equivalent reliability levels, provides means for quantifying adjusting reliability, offers design incentives for more reliable poles, and facilitates innovation and introduction of new material. With its technically innovative subject matter and detailed design examples, this manual will benefit pole manufacturers as well as electrical, structural, and transmission and distribution engineers.

Proceedings of the Pipeline Division Specialty Conference, held in Chicago, Illinois, July 30-August 2, 2006. Sponsored by the Pipeline Division of ASCE. This collection of 97 papers focuses on the engineering of pipelines, which provide a vital service in transporting water, wastewater, drainage, natural gas, petroleum, and other products. These papers provide guiding principles for managing the design, construction, and operation of pipelines. Topics include: hydraulic design, asset and construction management, durability, infrastructure renewal, planning, seismic effects and safety, soil structure interaction, and trenchless technology construction.

Minimum Design Loads for Buildings and Other Structures provides requirements for general structural design and the means for determining dead, live, soil, flood, wind, snow, rain, atmospheric ice, and earthquake loads, as well as their combinations, which are suitable for inclusion in building codes and other documents. This Standard, a complete revision of ASCE/SEI 7-02, includes revised and significantly reorganized provisions for seismic design of structures, as well as revisions in the provisions for determining live, flood, wind, snow, and atmospheric ice loads. Supplement No. 1, which is included with the Standard, ensures full and complete coordination between ASCE/SEI 7-05 and the 2006 International Building Code. The updates which comprise Supplement No. 1 are seamlessly integrated into this volume and are not available anywhere else. ASCE/SEI 7-05 is an integral part of building codes in the United States. The earthquake load provisions in ASCE 7-05 are substantially adopted by reference in the 2006 International Building Code and the 2006 NFPA 5000 Building Construction and Safety Code. Many other provisions, including calculations for wind and snow loads, are also adopted by reference by both IBC and NFPA model building codes. Structural engineers, architects, and those engaged in preparing and administering local building codes will find this Standard an essential reference in their practice.
