Abstract

In recent decades, material development in response to the call for more durable infrastructures has led to many exciting advancements. The purpose of this book is to provide an up-to-date review of several emerging infrastructure materials that may have a significant impact on repair and/or new construction. The two areas that take high priority in this book are the materials design concept that has led to the creation of advanced composites. Such design methodology has been made possible by several key advancements in materials science and mechanics. Secondly each chapter will be concluded w

Abstract

"It is crucial that engineers - from students to those already practising - have a deep understanding of the environmental threats facing the world, if they are to become part of the solution and not the problem. Is there a way to reconcile modern lifestyles with the compelling need for change? Could new improved technologies play a key role? If great leaps in the environmental efficiency of technologies are needed, can they be produced? Engineers are in a privileged and hugely influential position to innovate, design and build a sustainable future. But are they engaged or uninterested? Are they knowledgeable or ignorant? This book has been developed by a number of committed educators in European engineering departments under the leadership of Delft University of Technology and the Technical University of Catalunya to meet the perceived gap between what engineers know and what they should know in relation to sustainable development. The University of Delft decided as long ago as 1998 that all of its engineering graduates, working towards careers as designers, managers or researchers, should be prepared for the challenge of sustainable development and, as such, should leave university able to make sustainable development operational in their designs and daily practices. The huge amount of knowledge gathered on best-practice teaching for engineers is reflected in this book. The aim is to give engineering students a grounding in the challenge that sustainable development poses to the engineering profession, the contribution the engineer can make to attaining some of the societal and environmental goals of sustainability, and the barriers and pitfalls engineers will likely need to confront in their professional lives. Concise but comprehensive, the book examines the key tools, skills and techniques that can be used in engineering design and management to ensure that whole-life costs and impacts of engineering schemes are addressed at every stage of planning, implementation and disposal. The book also aims to demonstrate through real-life examples the tangible benefits that have already been achieved in many engineering projects, and to highlight how real improvements can be, and are being, made. Each chapter ends with a series of questions and exercises for the student to undertake. Sustainable Development for Engineers will be essential reading for all engineers and scientists concerned with sustainable development. In particular, it provides key reading and learning materials for undergraduate and postgraduate students reading environmental, chemical, civil or mechanical engineering, manufacturing and design, environmental science, green chemistry and environmental management."--Provided by publisher.

Abstract

ENCOUNTERING SUSTAINABILITY IN CHINA Yung-Ho Chang What I am writing is by no means a typical foreword. Instead of introducing the work outside of Beijing, we enclosed a courtyard with buildings and hillside to create a of my colleagues in the Department of Architecture at Massachusetts Institute of milder microclimate. We also employed two traditional materials, earth and wood, Technology (MIT), I will use this opportunity to share my own limited but critical specifically rammed-earth walls and laminated wood frames, to build a structure that experience with the development of sustainability in China. However, I would like to is capable of disintegration and would produce less waste once the house is no longer point out that the authors of this book are among the pioneers for sustainability needed. Although ancient wisdom, rather than advanced technology, was engaged, research and design in China, and they have helped to build the foundation of an we were able to address the issue of sustainability for the first time. After all, ecologically sensitive architecture in China. sustainability is about a way of thinking. Step II. UFIDA R&D Center, Beijing: For this project for a software company, the A CHANGING PRACTICE sustainable design focused on the reorganization of workspaces. The circulation system was transformed into public areas where communication and socialization is As an architect in China, I have been confronted by the issue of sustainability and encouraged and located in zones that receive more daylight and better views.

Abstract

What potential do the new technologies and materials of today hold for domestic living and residential architecture of tomorrow? Fifteen architects and designers from nine countries sought to address this question. Their visionary answers are presented for the first time in the context of OPEN HOUSE with a series of models, interactive installations, and films. The multi-faceted designs include inspiring proposals for opening up new urban spaces and creating new worlds of experience, novel types of flexible and variable room concepts as well as innovative ideas for building shells capable of automatically reacting to climatic influences and the requirements of occupants.
