Abstract

The completely revised second edition of this user-friendly and application-oriented overview of one-step biotransformations of industrial importance.Based on extensive literature and patent research, this book is unique in arranging each process in a systematic way to allow for easy comparison. All the chapters have been rewritten, with all the processes updated and more than 30 new processes added. Each set of data is accompanied by key literature citations, supported by flow sheets where available, reduced to their significant elements. In addition, an extensive index classified by substrates, products, enzymes, and companies provides direct access to each process, organized according to enzyme class. Biotechnologists, biochemists, microbiologists, process engineers and those working in the chemical and biotechnological industries will find here all the significant parameters characterizing both the biotransformation and the process.

Abstract

Bioprocessing for Value-Added Products from Renewable Resources provides a timely review of new and unconventional techniques to manufacture high-value products based on simple biological material. The current source for most chemicals and materials is petroleum. Anticipation of its limited future availability, along with record high prices has spurred interest in alternatives that will be both sustainable and cost-effective. In a very structured way this book begins by describing the modern technologies that form the basis for creating a bio-based industry. Next it lists the various

Abstract

Misfoldedaggregatedproteinoncewasconsideredasinterestingasyesterday’strash—a bothersome by-product of important and productive activities, to be disposed of and forgotten as quickly as possible. Yesterday’s trash has become today’s focus of cons- erable scienti?c interest for at least two reasons: (1) protein aggregates are at the core of a number of chronic degenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease, and (2) - gregation poses signi?cant obstacles to the manufacture of safe, ef?cacious, and stable protein products. As interest in protein misfolding, aggregation, and stability has soared beyond the core group of traditional protein-folding scientists, and as substantial scienti?c progress in understanding and controlling protein misfolding has been achieved, the need to summarize the state of the art became manifest. Although there are many excellent texts and edited collections on protein structure and folding, these volumes tend to relegate protein misfolding and aggregation to a minor role. Review articles and books focused on the biological role of protein aggregates in diseases have been published recently. Misbehaving Proteins: Protein (Mis)folding, Aggregation, and Stability differs from theseotherrecenteffortsinitsemphasisonfundamentalcomputationalandexperimental studies and in its linkage of disparate consequences of protein misfolding (e.g., from clinical manifestations to manufacturing headaches) to their common causes.

Abstract

Thermo-fluid dynamics of two-phase flow is an important subject for various scientific and engineering fields. It plays a particularly significant role in thermal-hydraulic analysis of nuclear reactor transients and accidents. The topics of multiphase flow are also essential for various engineering systems related to energy, chemical engineering processes and heat transfer. Thermo-fluid Dynamics of Two-phase Flow is written for graduate students, scientists and engineers who need in depth theoretical foundations to solve two-phase problems in various technological systems. Based on the extensive research experiences focused on the fundamental physics of two-phase flow, the authors present the detailed theoretical foundation of multi-phase flow thermo-fluid dynamics as they apply to: - Nuclear reactor transient and accident analysis - Energy systems - Power generation systems - Chemical reactors and process systems - Space propulsion - Transport processes.

Abstract

Systems with delays appear frequently in engineering; typical examples include communication networks, chemical processes and tele-operation systems. The presence of delays makes system analysis and control design much more complicated. During the last decade, we have witnessed significant developments in robust control of time-delay systems. This volume presents a systematic and comprehensive treatment for robust (H-infinity) control of such systems in the frequency domain. The emphasis is on systems with a single input or output delay, although the delay-free part of the plant can be multi-input-multi-output, in which case the delays in different channels should be the same. This synthesis of the author’s recent work covers the whole range of robust control of time-delay systems: from controller parameterization and design to controller implementation; from the Nehari and one-block problems to the four-block problem; from theoretical developments to practical issues. The major tools used in this book are similarity transformation, the chain-scattering approach and J-spectral factorization. The idea is, in the words of Albert Einstein, to "make everything as simple as possible, but not simpler". A website associated with the book, is a source of MATLAB® and Simulink® material which will assist in the simulation of the material in the text. Robust Control of Time-delay Systems is self-contained and will interest control theorists, researchers and mathematicians working with time-delay systems and engineers looking to design commercial controllers or to use them in plants, biosystems or communication systems with time delays. Its methodical approach will also be of value to graduates studying either general (robust) control theory or its particular applications in time-delay systems.

Abstract

Although solid-state fermentation (SSF) has been practiced for many centuries in the preparation of traditional fermented foods, its application to newer products within the framework of modern biotechnology is relatively restricted. It was c- sidered for the production of enzymes in the early 1900s and for the production of penicillin in the 1940s, but interest in SSF waned with the advances in submerged liquid fermentation (SLF) technology. The current dominance of SLF is not s- prising: For the majority of fermentation products, it gives better yields and is e- ier to apply. It is notoriously difficult to control the fermentation conditions in SSF; these difficulties are already apparent at small scale in the laboratory and are exacerbated with increase in scale. However, there are particular circumstances and products for which SSF technology is appropriate. For example, a desire to reuse solid organic wastes from agriculture and food processing rather than simply discarding them leads naturally to the use of SSF. Further, some microbial pr- ucts, such as fungal enzymes and spores, amongst others, are produced in higher yields or with better properties in the environment provided by SSF systems. With recognition of this potential of SSF, a revival of interest began in the mid- 1970s. However, the theoretical base for SSF bioreactor technology only began to be established around 1990.

Abstract

The book presents the latest developments in simulation of integrated processes as well as new methods of process synthesis and process control. It shows details of experimental approaches for model validation, determining of model parameters and measurement techniques. The combination of sophisticated modelling, optimisation methods and experimental results has not ben published up to now. The book gives deep insights into the overall evaluation of integrated processes as well as development of methods for a systematic design and optimisation of integrated reaction and separation processes. Potentials for process integration and the technical as well as economic limitations have been identified. The book covers several case studies of reactive distillation, reactive extraction, reactive gas-adsorption and chromatographic reactors which have been investigated from the modelling and experimental point of view. Based on validated models process simulation was used to optimize these processes. Following the concept of integrated process design approaches have been developed for model predictive control and process optimisation during production. Another new and very important focus of the book is systematic synthesis of integrated processes. The book addresses readers from industry as well as academic researchers. Professor Dr.-Ing. Schmidt-Traub studied Chemical Engineering, first in Braunschweig, then in Berlin, where he got his PhD and habilitation from the Technical University. He worked in leading positions in engineering industry. He held the chair of Plant Design at the University of Dortmund and chaired Dechema as well as GVC working groups. He was speaker of the Research Group " Integrated Reaction and Separation Operations" by Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG). His main research activities are preparative chromatography, down stream processing, process design and plant engineering. Professor Górak graduated from Technical University of Lodz, Poland, where he also got his PhD before he joined Henkel kGaA in Düsseldorf as senior researcher. He got his "venia legendi" from RWTH Aachen and was appointed for Professor at Dortmund University and at the Technical University of Lodz, Poland. Chairman of several German Working Parties on Fluid Separation and Process Simulation, editor. His scientific interests are reactive and bioreactive separation processes, process intensification, computer aided process engineering.
