Abstract

This text has been designed specifically to help senior plastic surgery trainees to prepare for and pass their postgraduate examinations in plastic surgery. It will also appeal to trainees with less experience who may use it as a core text during their training. The first edition of this text was written by the author in preparation for the FRCS(Plast) examination. It is a collection of notes that addresses the whole curriculum of plastic surgery providing information on clinical anatomy, points of technique and the fundamental principles relevant to each subject area. There are self assessment sections and hundreds of reviews of published articles. This text has become essential reading for all trainees and the second edition has sought to update the text mainly with regard to material published over the past 5 years. There is no other textbook of plastic surgery of this kind available to trainees in plastic surgery.

Abstract

Abstract

designed to be read section by section in the order in which it is presented. I would then recommend a re-reading of the first section so that the tenets laid down in this area are more readily understood after having experienced the tech nical presentations. The serious student will then utilize the book as an atlas of techniques that can be conveniently referenced when needed in any particular situation. All surgeons should then use any new information as a beginning plat form of information from which to develop and refine their own experience, col lecting and analyzing their own personal library of techniques, as they advance though this most wonderful and satisfying Discipline. PHILOSOPHY/ P LAN NIN G/ART iil PHILOSOPHY OF SUCCESSFUL REVISION RHINOPLASTY CONFIDENCE The key element necessary to succeed in any endeavor is confidence. This is observed very obviously in sports like tennis and in technical skills like shooting. However, in surgery in general and in revision surgery more specifically, the ele ment of a confident surgeon is paramount to the successful completion of the operation. The confidence factor of a surgeon is, of course, determined by many things. Most surgeons are inherently confident. However, the supreme confi dence necessary to complete a difficult and challenging revision rhinoplasty must be meticulously acquired. Initially, confidence is gained with experience, supplemented by reading, direct observation, and studying videos.

Abstract

Every medical specialty has a core of classic papers that reflect both the historical development of the discipline and point the way to present and future developments. The Editors of Classic Papers in Coronary Angioplasty have assembled a distinguished team of international contributors, to identify, analyze and bring together in a single volume the most important articles from a broad range of publications that have become recognized as the defining articles in coronary angioplasty. This publication is a unique reference, for not only does it provide a single source for reviewing the most important papers in the discipline, it also provides a critical analysis of the strengths, weaknesses and the impact each paper has had on the development of coronary angioplasty. This book will be essential reading for cardiologists – in particular interventional cardiologists – radiologists, vascular surgeons and all involved in research and clinical practice in the field of coronary angioplasty.

Abstract

Considerable progress has been made in various fields of oculoplastic surgery, e.g. the development of endoscopic transcanalicular as well as endonasal minimal invasive techniques in lacrimal surgery, the use of muscle pedunculated scleral flaps to improve implant motility without pegging. This extraordinary volume enhances your understanding of Graves’ ophthalmopathy and helps you to define situations suitable for radiotherapy and more differentiated surgical strategies such as orbital fat resection, balance bony decompression and lid lengthening procedures. It exemplifies progress in aesthetic surgery such as endoscopic brow lift and soft techniques for mid-face rejuvenation and discusses general risks of infectious disease transmission using allografts as well as current concepts in the management of conjunctival neoplasms. Not only general and clinical ophthalmologists, but also ophthalmic and plastic surgeons will find this volume a stimulating resource that keeps them up to date on new developments in the interesting field of oculoplastic surgery.

Abstract

Although every year 5-10 million Americans have prosthetic devices fitted in their bodies, there are currently few well-accepted standards for their ongoing clinical management. In The Bionic Human: Health Promotion for People With Implanted Prosthetic Devices, a diverse panel of implant experts surveys the state of the art in patient follow-up for the most common prosthetic devices. The devices covered range from breast, penile, vascular, and joint prostheses to cochlear, ossicular, and dental implants, and include cerebrospinal fluid shunts, cardiac valves, stents, and pacemakers. For each device, the authors consider its pros and cons, detail the best current strategies to keep patients with implants healthy, and evaluate the latest and most promising new diagnostic tests. Clinical counterpoints from distinguished authorities at major centers in the United States and Europe are offered throughout. Follow-up recommendations are summarized in a standardized format that allows comparative analysis and lays the foundation for controlled clinical trials and the eventual establishment of evidence-based guidelines. Additional chapters address epidemiological, societal, and policy issues associated with prosthetic use: what should be done to detect and/or prevent problems with implants, to detect such low-frequency events as the development of cancer, and to uncover the disorders to which patients with prostheses might be unusually prone? Finally, what are the costs of follow-up care and how should society allocate resources to care for these patients? Concise and highly practical, The Bionic Human: Health Promotion for People With Implanted Prosthetic Devices offers busy practitioners an integrated survey of best practices for the management of patients with implanted prosthetic devices and an insightful examination of the epidemiological, societal, and policy issues associated with their use.
