Rares sont les études qui s'attachent à lire la correspondance de Fronton pour elle-même : quand on ne s'ingénie pas à reconstituer le texte, on recherche chez le professeur de rhétorique du IIe siècle des renseignements pouvant éclairer notre connaissance de son époque. Or, la correspondance, parce qu'elle permet d'entrer dans l'intimité d'un orateur, est un moyen privilégié de connaître la réflexion sur la parole et l'acte d'écrire de l'une des figures marquantes de la littérature du IIe siècle. Il a dès lors paru pertinent d'analyser la correspondance du point de vue de la construction littéraire : l'écriture de Fronton se place en continuité avec une tradition, d'abord épistolaire, ensuite générique. En effet, les lettres frontoniennes ne relèvent pas uniquement du cadre épistolaire elles font écho aux discours réels, frôlent l'histoire, se transforment en éloges paradoxaux, s'inscrivent parfois dans une forme plus précise, comme celle de l'" éroticos ". D'où notre volonté d'analyser les textes au plus près de la pensée de l'auteur. Indiscrétion littéraire, cette étude propose cinq explorations du cabinet d'écriture d'un rhéteur latin à l'époque de la Seconde Sophistique.
