French authors in the eighteenth century traditionally used music to enhance literary love scenes. Jean-Jacques Rousseau considerably expanded contemporary notions of music?s expressive power, yet distinguished between the capacity of different nations and sexes to wield it. Rousseau?s controversial statements led his readers to interrogate the relationship between music, meaning, and morality. They depicted their resistance to his claims in musical tableaux, or musical performances staged for a beholder inscribed within the text. Tili Boon Cuillé?s Narrative Interludes chronicles the emergence of the musical tableau in French literature.Spanning the latter half of the eighteenth century, Cuillé brings the cultural discourse on music and musicians to bear on the works of Diderot, Cazotte, Beaumarchais, Charrière, Cottin, Krüdener, and Staël. She turns attention from the representation of music to its moral repercussions, from aesthetic innovation to social resistance, and from national to gender politics. Juxtaposing pre-eminent and popular writers, Cuillé reads their fictional works in light of their treatises on art and society, exploring the significance of musical tableaux that have previously fallen outside the scope of literary analysis but that revolutionized the form and function of music in the text.

The French administrative language of the European Union is an emerging discourse: it is only fifty years old, and has its origins in the French administrative register of the middle of the twentieth century, but it is also a unique contact situation in which translation has always played a pivotal role. Using the methodology of corpus linguistics, and a specially compiled corpus of texts, covering a range of genres, this book describes the current discourse of EU French from the perspective of phraseology and collocational patterning, and in particular in comparison with its French national counterpart. Corpus methodology and an inclusive notion of phraseology, embracing typical formulae, locutions , and patterning around keywords, reveal subtleties and patterns which otherwise remain hidden, and point to a discourse of EU French whose novel context of production has led it to be phraseologically conservative, compared with the administrative French of France.

La trajectoire de Wilfrid Baumgartner tout au long du XXe siècle a été celle d'un financier, au double sens que le mot a hérité de l'Ancien Régime : technicien des choses de l'argent et serviteur de la chose publique. Inspecteur des Finances, directeur du Trésor, gouverneur de la Banque de France, ministre des Finances, président de Rhône-Poulenc, le cas Baumgartner éclaire pour la première fois à cette échelle biographique la figure du grand commis à la française, de la crise de la Ille République aux années sombres de Vichy, de l'instabilité politique de la IVE' République aux ruptures du régime gaulliste. Cette étonnante continuité de l'homme est aussi celle de l'État en France dans la période. Elle est analysée ici à travers les profondes mutations qu'a connues, des années 1920 aux années 1970, le système financier français (monnaie, Trésor, banques et crédit), tant du point de vue des modalités changeantes du financement de l'activité économique que de celui de la place et du rôle de la France dans le système monétaire international, notamment dans le contexte de la construction européenne. Une hypothèse à visée globale sous-tend cette traversée de l'histoire de la France contemporaine : celle de l'institution par étapes, flux et reflux, d'une économie d'endettement en France, clef d'un certain modèle économique (et social) qui aura marqué en profondeur le siècle passé. « Un homme d'État...
