Abstract

Doelstelling: Deze scriptie is een semantische en pragmatische analyse van de vertaling van bepaalde passages van krantenartikels uit The Guardian en De Standaard door professionele vertalers en studenten. Daarbij stonden twee vragen centraal: enerzijds werd onderzocht of hyponiemen, hyperoniemen en antonimische vertalingen anders gebruikt werden door studenten dan door professionele vertalers, anderzijds werd onderzocht welke semantische en pragmatische betekenisverschillen er kunnen optreden in dergelijke vertalingen. Middelen of methode: Het onderzoek werd gevoerd op basis van een corpus met vijftien krantenartikels uit The Guardian die vertaald werden voor De Standaard. Bepaalde passages werden door studenten van de eerste licentie vertaald. Vervolgens werd van die passages de professionele vertaling vergeleken met die van de studenten. Voor de beschrijving van de betekenis is vooral gebruikt gemaakt van de Oxford English Dictionary, de Van Dale Groot Woordenboek Engels - Nederlands, Van Dale Groot woordenboek Nederlands-Engels, de Van Dale Groot woordenboek der Nederlandse Taal en de Van Dale Hedendaags Nederlands en Synoniemenwoordenboek. Resultaten: Uit het onderzoek blijkt dat er heel wat soorten semantische en pragmatische betekenisverschillen optreden in de vertalingen van professionele vertalers en van studenten. Deze scriptie geeft een duidelijke indeling en voorbeelden van deze soorten betekenisverschillen. Bovendien is voor de onderzochte passages gebleken dat studenten meestal een synoniem gebruikten, terwijl de professionele vertalers eerder een vertaling kozen die pragmatisch verschilde van de brontekst. Wat de onderzochte vertaaltechnieken betreft toonde het onderzoek aan dat zowel de professionele vertalers als de studenten ongeveer evenveel hyponiemen als hyperoniemen gebruiken. De antonimische vertaling daarentegen wordt minder vaak gebruikt door zowel de professionele vertalers als de studenten.

Abstract

'Identity' is a central organizing feature of our social world. Across the social sciences and humanities, it is increasingly treated as something that is actively and publicly accomplished in discourse. This book defines identity in its broadest sense, in terms of how people display who they are to each other. Each chapter examines a different discursive environment in which people do 'identity work': everyday conversation, institutional settings, narrative and stories, commodified contexts, spatial locations, and virtual environments. The authors describe and demonstrate a range of discourse and interaction analytic methods as they are put to use in the study of identity, including 'performative' analyses, conversation analysis, membership categorization analysis, critical discourse analysis, narrative analysis, positioning theory, discursive psychology and politeness theory. The book aims to give readers a clear sense of the coherence (or otherwise) of these different approaches, the practical steps taken in analysis, and their situation within broader critical debates. Abstract

Building on the first volume in the Studies in Pragmatics series which clearly set out the differences and similarities in approaches to discourse markers, Pragmatic Markers in Contrast continues the debate through offering a unique and thorough examination of the methods and theories for studying pragmatic markers cross-linguistically. As a result of internationalisation and new developments in linguistics there has been an increasing interest in cross-linguistic studies. Aijmer and Simon-Vandenbergen have assembled experts in this field to explore the comparison of pragmatic markers across languages in order to offer important insights into the similarities and differences between languages. Contrastive studies can also shed more light on the pragmatic and discourse functions that pragmatic markers fulfil in the languages compared. Another issue is to what extent pragmatic markers which have evolved from the same lexical source have developed similar functions in different languages. An impressively large number of different approaches are represented in this volume as well as a wide range of languages including; English, Swedish, Spanish, Dutch, German, French, Norwegian and Solv (a dialect of Finland Swedish).

Abstract

The multifaceted and heterogeneous category of common ground is central to theories of pragmatics, sociolinguistics, discourse and context. This book addresses current approaches to common ground from the novel perspective of lexical markers. The edited volume falls in two parts. The first part addresses the relationship between mechanisms of grounding and reference to common ground. The second part examines different types of common ground. It is shown that the investigation of lexical markers provides a novel perspective for investigating the relationship between grounding, common ground and common grounds. Contributions are by Sherri L. Condon and Claude G. Cech, Anita Fetzer, Kerstin Fischer, Francois Nemo, Thanh Nyan, Moeko Okada, Carlos Rodriguez Penagos, Karin Pittner and Thora Tenbrink. It reviews current approaches to common ground from the perspective of lexical markers. It is organized into two parts that discuss the relationship between mechanisms of grounding. It is a reference to common ground and the different types of common ground. It reflects current trends in the field that cross methodological boundaries and integrate cognition, context, genre, negotiation of meaning, and dialogue.
