L'intérêt considérable de la théorie de la culture défendue par Dan Sperber, dans son livre La contagion des idées, est d'expliciter plus fermement que de coutume les présupposés ontologiques d'une approche atomiste dans ce domaine. L'ethnographe présuppose qu'il y a dans le monde, non seulement des personnes, mais des idées. Comment les idées sont-elles dans le monde ? Le "monisme ontologique" de Sperber consiste à refuser de multiplier les genres d'entités. Les idées sont donc, selon lui, des entités matérielles au même titre que les personnes. Pourtant, le véritable problème ontologique qui se pose au sujet des idées n'est pas de décider si elles sont des objets matériels ou plutôt des objets immatériels, mais de savoir si leur mode d'être est celui des objets ou s'il est d'une autre catégorie que celle des objets.

Herbert Feigl (1902-1988) est le premier membre fondateur du Cercle de Vienne émigré aux États-Unis. Son maître Moritz Schlick (1882-1936), avec qui il correspond de 1923 jusqu’en 1935, exerce une influence sur sa réflexion concernant la théorie physique dans la question du physicalisme. Le problème des fondements de la biologie et de la psychologie, au centre de l’essai de Feigl Le « physique » et le « mental » (1958) ne trouve de solution provisoire que dans les tentatives de la psychologie béhavioriste de se rapprocher d’une conception scientifique du monde. Une nouvelle forme de langage dans le domaine du psychique est exigible. Cette nouvelle méthode de l’analyse logique définit un nouvel empirisme et un nouveau positivisme. Une nouvelle théorie de l’identité doit être construite entre les critiques de Carnap et les espoirs des neurosciences naissantes. L’autocérébroscopie, son invention du cerveau en train de se voir penser, a été le moyen pour l’empirisme de résoudre le paradoxe de la traduisibilité des énoncés concernant les objets physiques en énoncés concernant les données phénoménales. En allant de la physique au mental, Feigl propose en philosophie un matérialisme non réductionniste qui renouvelle la traduction des énoncés et qui établit les conditions d’un cerveau conscient de son corps.
