Abstract

Direct strip casting is a continuous casting process for producing metallic sheet directly from the molten state that minimises the need for substantial secondary processing. This important book is the first to review the implications of strip casting technology for a range of alloys, including carbon and stainless steel, aluminium, magnesium, titanium, copper and other non-ferrous alloys. The book is divided into six chapters, with the first two describing the physical metallurgy of candidate alloys for direct strip casting and the development of microstructure during solidification. Chapter 3 describes the principles of continuous casting processes and the evolution of direct strip casting. It provides the foundation for the following two chapters which describe process variables and their impact on microstructure and strip quality. The final chapter describes possible techniques in secondary processing and fabrication of the as-cast strip. Two appendices discuss simulation and modelling issues, and the measurement and representation of textures in metal strip. Direct strip casting of metals and alloys is a standard reference on a technology destined to have a profound impact on the manufacturing landscape of the twenty-first century. Abstract

First published in looseleaf format in 1993, Base Metals Handbook has been described as the bible of the metals trading community. The looseleaf is divided into seven sections. The first of these provides a general introduction to the history, structure and workings of the base metals markets, with particular reference to the London Metal Exchange (LME). The following sections review aluminium, copper, lead, zinc, nickel and tin. Each of the sections on a particular metal reviews extraction and refining, the major markets for the metal, and the trading environment. The looseleaf includes data. Bearings are widely used in rotating machines. Understanding the factors affecting their reliability and service life is essential in ensuring good machine design and performance. Solving tribology problems in rotating machines reviews these factors and their implications for improved machine performance. Cotton Trading Manual (CTM) is the first work to provide a comprehensive reference source to the conduct of the complex international cotton market. CTM begins by looking at the history of the cotton trade, and then moves on to assess the current global picture, including a discussion of trends in the market, as well as production and consumption analysis. The third and fourth parts focus on trading in physical cotton and futures respectively. Finally, the last section deals with administrative and management issues within the cotton trade as a whole, such as contracts, insurance and risk management. CTM is an indispensable practical companion for all those involved with trading in this commodity. Comprehensive reference to the complex international cotton marketDiscusses the history of the cotton tradeAssesses the global picture, looking at trends and production and consumption analysis.

Abstract

Selective laser sintering/melting (SLS/SLM) of Fe – Cu – Fe3+xP – Ni powder is performed to evaluate the feasibility to manufacture iron-based parts with a high density. A second part focuses on the effect of process parameters, alloying elements (C, Si, Ti and Cu) and oxygen on the behaviour of Fe during selective laser melting (SLM). In pulsed laser mode at high energy intensities strong evaporation of the material induces a recoil pressure that acts on the melt pool, facilitating the densification at intermediate pressure values. Parts with a density of up to 95% are produced from Fe – Cu – Fe3+xP – Ni, Fe and Fe – C (0.2 – 0.8 wt% C) powders. The stability of an iron-based melt pool created during SLM in continuous laser mode on top of a loose powder bed is largely affected by the scan speed, the oxygen content in the atmosphere and alloying elements. This is mainly explained in terms of their effect on the aspect ratio of the melt pool and on the kinetics of Rayleigh instability. A correlation between the surface morphology and porosity of three-dimensional parts on the one hand and the effect of process and material parameters on the physical phenomena during SLM on the other hand is proposed. The heat release during oxidation of Fe or of alloying elements such as C, Si or Ti has a large impact on the quality of a part after SLM.

Abstract

Laser shock peening (LSP) is a relatively new surface treatment for metallic materials. LSP is a process to induce compressive residual stresses using shock waves generated by laser pulses. LSP can greatly improve the resistance of a material to crack initiation and propagation brought on by cyclic loading and fatigue. This book will be the first of its kind to consolidate scattered knowledge into one comprehensive volume. It describes the mechanisms of LSP and its substantial role in improving fatigue performance in terms of modification of microstructure, surface morphology, hardness and str
