Abstract

This volume contains the papers presented at the Eighth International S- posium on Practical Aspects of Declarative Languages (PADL 2006) held on January 9-10, 2006, in Charleston, South Carolina. Information about the c- ference can be found athttp://www.cs.brown.edu/people/pvh/PADL06.html. As is now traditional, PADL 2006 was co-located with the 33rd Annual Sym- sium on Principles of Programming Languages that was held on January 11-13, 2006. The PADL conference series is a forum for researchers and practioners to present original work emphasizing novel applications and implementation te- niques for all forms of declarative concepts. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to: – Innovative applications of declarative languages; – Declarative domain-speci?c languages and applications; – Practical applications of theoretical results; – New language developments and their impact on applications; – Evaluation of implementation techniques on practical applications; – Novel implementation techniques relevant to applications; – Novel uses of declarative languages in the classroom; – Practical experiences. This year, there were 36 submissions. Each submission was reviewed by at least three Programme Committee members. The committee decided to accept 15 papers. In addition, the programme also included three invited talks by Erik Meijer, David Roundy, and Philip Walder.

Abstract

This volume contains the proceedings of the 4th Asian Symposium on Progr- mingLanguagesandSystems(APLAS2006),whichtookplaceinSydney,Japan, November 8-10, 2006. The symposium was sponsored by the Asian Association for Foundation of Software. In response to the call for papers, 70 full submissions were received. Each submission was reviewed by at least three Program Committee members with the help of external reviewers. The ProgramCommittee meeting was conducted electronically over a 2-week period. After careful discussion, the Program C- mittee selected 22 papers. I would like to sincerely thank all the members of the APLAS 2006 Program Committee for their excellent job, and all the external reviewers for their invaluable contribution. The submission and review process was managed using the CyberChair system. In addition to the 22 contributed papers, the symposium also included two invited talks by Jens Palsberg (UCLA, Los Angeles, USA) and Peter Stuckey (University of Melbourne, Melbourne, Australia), and one tutorial by Matthew Flatt (University of Utah, USA). Many people helped to promote APLAS as a high-quality forum in Asia to serve programming language researchers worldwide. Following a series of we- attended workshops that were held in Singapore (2000), Daejeon (2001), and Shanghai (2002), the ?rst three formal symposiums were held in Beijing (2003), Taipei (2004) and Tsukuba (2005).

Abstract

ETAPS 2006 was the ninth instance of the European Joint Conferences on Theory and Practice of Software. ETAPS is an annual federated conference that was established in 1998 by combining a number of existing and new conferences. This year it comprised ?ve conferences (CC, ESOP, FASE, FOSSACS, TACAS), 18 satellite workshops (AC- CAT, AVIS, CMCS, COCV, DCC, EAAI, FESCA, FRCSS, GT-VMT, LDTA, MBT, QAPL, SC, SLAP, SPIN, TERMGRAPH, WITS and WRLA), two tutorials, and seven invited lectures (not including those that were speci?c to the satellite events). We - ceived over 550 submissions to the ?ve conferences this year, giving an overall acc- tance rate of 23%, with acceptance rates below 30% for each conference. Congratu- tions to all the authors who made it to the ?nal programme! I hope that most of the other authorsstill founda way of participatingin this excitingevent and I hope you will continue submitting. The events that comprise ETAPS address various aspects of the system devel- ment process, including speci?cation, design, implementation, analysis and impro- ment. The languages, methodologies and tools which support these activities are all well within its scope. Di?erent blends of theory and practice are represented, with an inclination towards theory with a practical motivation on the one hand and soundly based practice on the other. Many of the issues involved in software design apply to systems in general, including hardware systems, and the emphasis on software is not intended to be exclusive.

Abstract

On behalf of the Steering Committee we are pleased to present the proceedings of the 2006 Joint Modular Languages Conference (JMLC), organized by Oxford Brookes University, Oxford, UK and held at Jesus College, Oxford. The mission of JMLC is to explore the concepts of well-structured programming languages and software and those of teaching good design and programming style. JMLC 2006 was the seventh in a series of successful conferences with themes including the construction of large and distributed software systems, and software en- neering aspects in new and dynamic application areas. We were fortunate to have a dedicated Program Committee comprising 41 internationally recognized researchers and industrial practitioners. We received 36 submissions and each paper was reviewed by at least three Program C- mittee members (four for papers with an author on the Program Committee). The entire reviewing process was supported by the OpenConf system. In total, 23 submissions were accepted along with two invited papers and are included in this proceedings volume. For the successful local organization of JMLC we thank Muneera Masterson, Ali McNi?e and Fiona Parker and other sta? and student helpers of Oxford BrookesUniversityaswellasRosemaryFrameandJoKnightonandothersta?of JesusCollege,Oxford.TheproceedingsyounowholdwerepublishedbySpringer and we are grateful for their support. Finally, we must thank the many authors who contributed the high-quality papers contained within these proceedings.

Abstract

The workshop on Declarative Agent Languages and Technologies is a we- established venue for researchers interested in sharing their experiences in the areas of declarative and formal aspects of agents and multi-agent systems, and in engineering and technology. Today it is still a challenge to develop techno- gies that can satisfy the requirements of complex agent systems. The design and development of multi-agent systems still calls for models and technologies that ensure predictability, enable feature discovery, allow for the veri?cation of properties, and guarantee ?exibility. Declarative approaches are potentially a valuable means for satisfying the needs of multi-agent system developers and for specifying multi-agent systems. DALT 2005, the third edition of the workshop, was held in Utrecht, The Netherlands, in July 2005, in conjunction with AAMAS 2005, the Fourth Int- national Joint Conference on Agents and Multiagent Systems. Over 30 persons attended the workshop con?rming the success of the previous editions in M- bourne 2003 (LNAI 2990) and New York 2004 (LNAI 3476). The workshop series is a forum of discussion aimed both at supporting the transfer of decla- tive paradigms and techniques into the broader community of agent researchers andpractitioners, and atbringing theissuesofdesigningreal-world andcomplex agent systems to the attention of researchers working on declarative progr- ming and technologies.

Abstract

The LNCS Journal on Data Semantics is devoted to the presentation of notable work that, in one way or another, addresses research and development on issues related to data semantics. Based on the highly visible publication platform Lecture Notes in Computer Science, this new journal is widely disseminated and available worldwide. The scope of the journal ranges from theories supporting the formal definition of semantic content to innovative domain-specific applications of semantic knowledge. The journal addresses researchers and advanced practitioners working on the semantic web, interoperability, mobile information services, data warehousing, knowledge representation and reasoning, conceptual database modeling, ontologies, and artificial intelligence.
