De geestelijke gezondheidszorg in Nederland is nog steeds (te) weinig ingesteld op allochtonen. Omdat een theoretisch kader en empirisch onderzoek grotendeels ontbreken, berust kennis van de transculturele psychiatrie nagenoeg geheel op klinische ervaring. In 'Transculturele psychiatrie' ontwikkelt de auteur op basis van zijn praktijkervaringen - en die van anderen - een theoretisch model op basis waarvan algemene omgangsproblemen en specifieke professionele problemen in kaart gebracht en geanalyseerd kunnen worden. Vanuit dat model worden vervolgens voorstellen gedaan voor de beargumenteerde benadering van de betreffende problematiek. In het boek staat veel casuïstiek, ook uit derdewereldlanden.
